Removing and installing/replacing inlet and exhaust adjustment units on left side (S63T2) (X5 M)

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Read fault memory and make a documentary record .
Remove LEFT CYLINDER HEAD COVER .
Remove LEFT GEAR CASE COVER .
Check TIMING .

IMPORTANT: If special tool can not be fitted, hexagon head of relevant camshafts must be counter-supported when releasing central bolt.

Release central bolts (1 and 2) of intake adjuster and exhaust camshaft adjuster.

Installation note:

Replace central bolts after releasing.

Coat contact surface of new central bolt (1) with 4.4 copper paste.

Release special tool 2 249 162 at knurled screws and remove.

IMPORTANT: Danger of mix-up: Intake and exhaust camshaft adjusters are different.

Mixing up the intake and exhaust camshaft adjuster will cause damage to the engine.

Intake adjuster is marked with {EIN} .
Exhaust camshaft adjuster is marked with {AUS} .

NOTE: Position of adjustment units in relation to timing chain can be freely selected.

Feed adjuster into timing chain and position on camshafts.

Insert central bolts (1 and 2) on adjustment units without gaps.

Release central bolts (1 and 2) by 45° .

Fit slide rail (2) and tighten with screws (1).

Tightening torque: 11 31 4AZ .

Remove special tool 11 9 190.

IMPORTANT: Crank engine back at central bolt through 45°.

Disconnect special tools 11 9 190 from gear case cover.

Rotate crankshaft in direction of engine rotation at central bolt until special tool 11 8 570 comes into contact in front of special tool 11 9 190.

Insert central bolt (1) of exhaust camshaft with special tool 11 4 350.

Joining torque 5 Nm .

Turn engine at central bolt further until special tool 11 9 190 can be positioned in gear case cover.

The engine is now 150° before TDC firing position cylinder 1.

Installation note:

Tighten central bolts beginning with the exhaust camshaft.

Insert central bolt (1) of exhaust camshaft with torque.

Tightening torque of 30 Nm
