51 24 350 Removing and installing/replacing left spindle drive (automatic tailgate activation)

WARNING: Danger of injury!
Support tailgate in fully opened position with suitable apparatus.
WARNING: In the event of customer complaints:
  • Rattling when opening and closing
  • Drive not functioning
  • Drive is blocked or sluggish
  • No longer closes or opens

Or if incorrect operation is suspected:
  • Rear lid was closed with excessive exertion of force
  • Bent, broken piston rod
  • Broken ball head

The compression spring must be secured against unintentional sudden release. 
WARNING: Observe warning notices on the damper.
Electric spindle drive for tailgate is under mechanical spring preload!
The component must be secured against falling down.
IMPORTANT: Risk of damage to spindle drive!
If spindle drive has been electrically disabled (e.g. connector unplugged) the tailgate must only be moved slowly by hand.

These repair instructions are based on the DISASSEMBLY AND INSTALLATION OF BALL SOCKETS WITH CLAMP .

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

Version with load area net mounts: 

Remove all load area net mounts (3).

Open protective cap (1).

Release screw (2) and remove dividing net mounts (3).

Installation note:

Pay attention to position specifications on rear side of dividing net mounts.

Release edge protection of headlining (3) between left D-pillar and right D-pillar.

Unclamp clamp (2).

Lower headlining (1) in area of D-pillar by 7 cm.

Unclip wiring harness (1) from top to bottom at marked points.

Disconnect plug connection (1) at bottom.

Feed the rubber grommet (1) including wiring harness out.

Installation note: 

Rubber hose with rubber grommet (1) of spindle drive (2) may not be damaged or missing. Install rubber grommet (1) correctly to prevent water penetration.

Unclip spindle drive (2) from ball sockets (1) and remove.

NOTE: For possibly required tightening torques for holders of the spindle drive and/or ball head. See 51 24 14/15AZ .

Concluding tasks: 

Initialize automatic operation of tailgate using the service function in the diagnosis system.

Selection via:

Check the opening angle setting of the tailgate and restore the customer setting if necessary.
