11 12 101 Replacing the cylinder head gasket (M57T2- SCR)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2013 BMW X5, 2012 BMW X5, and 2011 BMW X5. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Necessary preliminary tasks:

IMPORTANT: Replace cylinder head gasket each time cylinder head is dismantled.
IMPORTANT: Only applies to E70
Only for vehicles with a production date between 27/01/2012 and 05/10/2012:
If during disassembly an injector shim (2) was removed in addition to a copper gasket (1), it is imperative that it is reinstalled.
Several cylinder heads were installed with an additional injector shim underneath the injector.
If the injector shim is not installed or two injector shims are installed, a malfunction of the engine may occur (e.g. irregular engine running, exhaust fumes).

IMPORTANT: Several cylinder heads were installed with an additional injector shim underneath the injector.

Before installing the injector it is imperative that the depth of the injector shaft is measured using a depth gauge.

The depth of the injector shaft is 126.25 mm.

Ensure that an injector shim is installed if one is needed.

If the injector shim is not installed or two injector shims are installed, a malfunction of the engine may occur (e.g. irregular engine running, exhaust fumes).

Remove cylinder head gasket (1).

Pay attention to cylinder head gasket thickness (2), identifiable by number of holes from 1 to 3.

IMPORTANT: Clean all blind hole threaded holes (3).
Remove oil and coolant (risk of cracking)  .

Clean sealing surface (4).

Use cylinder head gasket with the same thickness marking (1).

Number of holes 1 to 3.

IMPORTANT: If the piston protrusion is altered by machining of the sealing surface on the engine block, the cylinder head gasket must be remeasured.
(Refer to REMOVING AND INSTALLING PISTON ).

Installation note:

Joints between gear case cover and engine block are sealed with sealing strips stuck on as standard.

It is not  necessary to apply a permanently elastic sealant.
