Removing and installing carbon propeller shaft (inserted) complete

General INSTRUCTIONS RELATING CARBON PROPELLER SHAFTS must be followed.
Vehicles up to 07/2016:
Use new, non-precoated sunk nuts. Bond the recessed nut and propeller shaft with Loctite 648!
Vehicles with production dates from 07/2016 - 11/2017:
Use precoated recessed nuts! Do not further bond the recessed nuts with Loctite 648!
After the propeller shaft has been screwed into the rear axle differential, the hardening time must be observed!.
Hardening time:
- Non-precoated recessed nuts (adhesive strip with Loctite): min. 3h
- Precoated recessed nuts: min. 2h
The hardening time may be extended at lower temperatures!
Failure to comply with these instructions may cause serious damage!
Necessary preliminary work:
- Remove rear UNDERBODY PROTECTION .
- Remove complete EXHAUST SYSTEM .
- Remove heat shields
- On vehicles with manual gearbox, remove TRANSMISSION CROSS-MEMBER .
The spacer ring (1) on the rear axle gearbox input must be removed using a small screwdriver when replacing the propeller shaft.
Removal:
The carbon propeller shaft must be covered by the propeller shaft guard 2 359 261 before starting work.
- The flexible disc connection (1) on the front at the propeller shaft must be marked in one plane with the flexible disc (2) and the three-bolt flange (3) before loosening.
- During installation the three-bolt flange (3) must be forced back together again with the flexible disc (2) in the same position.
- Replace ZNS screws and self-locking nuts.
Loosen screws.
Failure to comply will result in humming and vibrations!
Before removing propeller shaft:
Check that mark (1) on rear axle differential and mark (2) on propeller shaft are present
Mark (1) present → propeller shaft can be removed.
Mark (1) not present → transfer mark (2) from propeller shaft to dust plate (transfer white marker line on carbon pipe (propeller shaft) to dust plate of rear axle differential)!
To release sunk nut, engage a gear and operate parking brake!
Failure to comply with this instruction may result in serious damage to the rear axle final drive!
If an attempt is made to open the sunk nut in counter-clockwise direction, the sunk nut will be automatically screwed in further and the insert collar of the 12-edge flange nut will be severely damaged.
If the insert collar of the flange nut was damaged, the propeller shaft can no longer be secured using a new sunk nut and the rear axle differential must be replaced.
Release sunk nut clockwise with special tools 2 348 293 and 33 5 070.
Remove retaining clip (1) and gasket (2).
Remove insert nut (1).
Only F80/F82 vehicles from 03/2014- 05/2014 with the propeller shaft BMW part number 8 600 524:
The spacer ring (1) on the rear axle gearbox input must be removed using a small screwdriver when replacing the propeller shaft.
Installation:
Installation note:
Check centering (1).
Replace any damaged CENTERING MOUNTS .
Before installing propeller shaft:
Clean insert collar (1) on flange nut and gearing on bevel pinion (2) of all residues and degrease!
Top up insert collar (1) with grease.
Clean and degrease axial contact surface (3).
Approved grease: refer to PROPELLER SHAFT - OPERATING FLUIDS .
Clean adhesive residue from the thread (1) of the propeller shaft hub.
Clean and degrease hub teeth (2).
Clean and degrease axial contact surface (3).
Parts : Replace gasket, sunk nut (1) and retaining clip (2).
Place flange nut (1) with gasket in insert collar of flange nut.
Mount retaining clip (2).
Installation sequence:
- Join propeller shaft to transmission
- Join propeller shaft to rear axle final drive
Screw-fastening sequence:
- Flexible disc to transmission
- Sunk nut on propeller shaft
Joining time using Loctite 648 applicable only for vehicles with production dates up to 07/2016:
After applying Loctite 648, the parts must be installed within 12 minutes!
Failure to comply with this instruction may result in detachment.
Use Loctite 648 (BMW part number 9 067 732) and evenly apply an even bead in this area (1) approximately 20 mm from the outside. The Loctite 648 must fill all tooth gaps uniformly to a length of approx. 5 mm.
- During installation the three-bolt flange (3) must be forced back together again with the flexible disc (2) on the marked plane.
Parts : Replace ZNS screws and self-locking nuts.
Mount new screws and nuts.
Align mark (1) of propeller shaft to mark (2) on rear axle differential dust plate and push on propeller as far as limit position of sunk nut.
Screw recessed nut (2) by hand at least 2 thread turns onto propeller shaft (1).
Brace mounting bolts of flexible disc on nut and tighten by screw.
Tightening torque 26 11 1AZ .
Secure angle of rotation special tool 00 9 120 with magnets 00 9 130 to the underbody and screw down further according to angle of rotation.
Apply Loctite 648 to the thread (1) of the propeller shaft as close as possible to the sunk nut.
Failure to comply with this instruction may result in serious damage to the rear axle final drive.
To tighten sunk nut, engage a gear and operate parking brake!
Screw in sunk nut counter-clockwise using special tools 2 348 293 and 33 5 070 (see direction of arrow in the illustration).
The sunk nut must be screwed into place within 5 minutes.
Tightening torque 26 11 3AZ .
A - incorrectly screwed → thread start of propeller shaft must not be visible!
B - correctly screwed →
Distance between recessed nut and propeller shaft: 0 to max. 4 mm
Remove CFRP propeller shaft guard 2 359 261.
Required follow-up work:
- Install the heat shields
- Install complete EXHAUST SYSTEM .
- Install UNDERBODY PROTECTION at rear
- On vehicles with manual gearbox, install TRANSMISSION CROSS-MEMBER .
