51 24 325 Removing and installing/replacing left tension spring for tailgate

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

WARNING: Danger of injury!
Support tailgate in fully opened position with suitable apparatus.

Lever out cover (1) and release screw underneath.

Tightening torque: 51 47 1AZ .

Remove lashing eye (2).

Remove storage tray (1) in upward direction.

Release expanding rivets (1).

Feed out luggage compartment wheel arch panel (2) in rear area but do not completely remove.

If necessary, unlock plug connection for charging socket and disconnect.

Installation note: 

Luggage compartment wheel arch panel (2) must fit correctly under tailgate rubber seal (1).

Note down position of tension spring (1) at rear holder (2).

WARNING: Wear gloves when detaching tension spring (1).

Detach tension spring (1) from rear holder (2).

Feed out tension spring (1) from hinge (3).

Installation note: 

Reattach tension spring (1) to rear holder (2) again in the same position.

Installation note: 

Positions (1 to 3) influence the closing force of the tension spring.

  1. Soft (factory setting without rear spoiler)
  2. Medium
  3. Hard (factory setting with rear spoiler)

If the closing force needs to be changed: Adhere to NOTES ON CLOSING FORCE SETTING .
