32 13 572 Replacing the electric steering gear (EPS) (without wheel alignment): Notes

Preliminary work 

• Print out fault memory
• Refer to REMOVING RIGHT LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT TRIM PANEL
• Disconnect the battery earth lead
• Refer to REMOVING THE FRONT LEFT AND RIGHT WHEELS .
• Remove front UNDERBODY PROTECTION .
• Remove cover of the steering assembly
  • Loosen the screws (1) and remove the cover (2). Loosen the expanding rivet (3) and remove the cover (4).
  • Loosen the expanding rivet (3) and remove the cover (4).

• Refer to REMOVING THE LEFT AND RIGHT TRACK ROD END 
• Release the steering shaft on the electromechanical steering gear.
  IMPORTANT:

  Risk of damage:  The steering column switch cluster (SZL) or the coil spring cassette can be damaged by twisting the steering wheel if the steering shaft below (or the universal joint) is disconnected from the steering gear or the steering column. Secure steering wheel from twisting.

  Release the clamping bolt (1) of the steering shaft at the electromechanical steering gear.

Follow-up work 

• Secure the steering shaft on the electromechanical steering gear. Tightening torque 32 31 2AZ .
• Refer to INSTALLING THE LEFT AND RIGHT TRACK ROD END .
• Install the steering assembly cover
• Install the front underbody protection
• Refer to INSTALLING THE FRONT LEFT AND RIGHT WHEELS
• Connect the battery earth lead
• Refer to INSTALLING RIGHT LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT TRIM PANEL
• Refer to ENCODING/PROGRAMMING CONTROL UNIT(S) .
