NOTE:
RISK OF DAMAGE
Damage to the engine.
If the engine is manually rotated in the wrong direction of rotation, the engine can be damaged.
Damage to the engine.
If the engine is manually rotated in the wrong direction of rotation, the engine can be damaged.
- Only rotate the engine manually in the correct direction of rotation: a) clockwise when looking at the damper, or b) counterclockwise when looking at the chain drive. b) applies only if the timing chain is installed in the rear.
Preliminary work
- Refer to REMOVING CHAIN TENSIONER PISTON .
NOTE:

Install chain tensioner
- Replace chain tensioner.
Parts: Chain tensioner
- Replace sealing ring (1).
Parts: Sealing ring
- Tighten chain tensioner piston with the tool.
- Install the chain tensioner (1) from the top.
- Tighten the chain tensioner (1) from the bottom using the tool (2).
TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
| Chain tensioner to cylinder head | |
| 1. Joining torque | 20 Nm |
| 2. Angle of rotation | 30° |
Check
- Make sure the special tool 2 358 122
can be mounted.
Result
» The special tool 2 358 122 cannot be mounted.
Measure
- Turn the camshafts to the correct position or readjust the timing.
- At the mounting flats of the respective camshaft counter support with a open-end spanner.
- Remove the VANOS central valves (1)
with the special tool 0 496 855
.
- To release the central valve (1)
use the reversible ratchet (2)
from the special tool 0 496 855
with the special tool 2 450 487
.
- To release the central valve (1), use special tool 0 496 855 .
Check
- Check if the marks (1)
for the intake and exhaust camshaft can be read from the top.
Result
» Marks (1) cannot be read from the top.
Measure
- Turn the camshaft to the correct position.
- Use the special tool 2 288 380 to block the crankshaft in the TDC firing position, cylinder (1).
Check
- Check if the middle one of the three flat areas (1)
on both camshafts points towards the top. The special tool 2 358 122
may not be mounted when the camshafts are twisted by 180° (center flattened area points downwards).
Result
» The middle one of the three flat areas (1) does not point towards the top.
Measure
- Turn the camshaft to the correct position, so that the middle one of the three flat areas (1) on both camshafts points up.
- Mount special tool 2 358 122 .
- Secure the basic carrier (1) with the bolts (2) on the cylinder head.
- Position the gauge (3) with the recess on the mounting flats of the exhaust camshaft.
- Secure the gauge (3) with the bolts (5) on the basic carrier.
- Position the gauge (4) with the recess on the mounting flats of the intake camshaft.
- Secure the gauge (4)
with the bolts (5)
on the basic carrier.
- To tighten the central valve (1)
, use the reversible ratchet (2)
from the special tool 0 496 855
with special tool 2 450 487
.
- To tighten the central valve
(1), use special tool 0 496 855
.
- Tighten the VANOS central valve of the intake adjuster (1)
with special tool 0 496 855
or 2 450 487. TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
