11 36 048 Removing and Installing/Replacing Inlet and Exhaust Adjustment Units On Right Side (N63O1)

Special Tools Required: 

(Cylinder Bank 1 To 4) 

Necessary Preliminary Tasks: 

IMPORTANT: If Special Tool 2 249 117 Can Not Be Fitted, It Is Necessary To Counterhold Hexagon Head of Respective Camshaft When Releasing Central Bolt.

Release Central Bolts (1 and 2) of Intake and Exhaust Camshaft Adjusters.

Installation Note: 

Replace Central Bolts After Releasing.

IMPORTANT: Check Whether Head of Central Bolt (1) Is Greased (See Arrow In Illustration).

Installation Note: 

Coat Contact Surface of New Central Bolt (1) with 4.4 Copper Paste.

Release Screw (1).

Remove Special Tool 2 249 162 .

Release Screws (1).

Remove Upper Tensioning Rail (2).

Remove Central Bolt (1) of Exhaust Adjustment Unit.

Installation Note: 

Replace Central Bolts After Releasing.

Detach Exhaust Adjustment Unit (1) In Direction of Arrow From Exhaust Camshaft.

Feed Out Exhaust Adjustment Unit (2) From Timing Chain (1).

Lift Out Exhaust Adjustment Unit (2).

Remove Central Bolt (2) of Inlet Adjustment Unit.

Installation Note: 

Replace Central Bolts After Releasing.

Detach Inlet Adjustment Unit (1) In Direction of Arrow From Inlet Camshaft.

Feed Out Inlet Adjustment Unit (2) From Timing Chain (1).

Lift Out Inlet Adjustment Unit (2).

IMPORTANT: Danger of Mix-Up:
Intake and Exhaust Camshaft Adjusters Are Different.
Mixing Up The Inlet and Exhaust Adjustment Units Will Cause Damage To The Engine.
  1. Intake Adjuster Is Marked with {EIN  }.
  2. Exhaust Camshaft Adjuster Is Marked with {AUS  }.

Installation Note: 

Coat Contact Surface of New Central Bolt (1) with 4.4 Copper Paste.

NOTE: Position of Adjustment Units In Relation To Timing Chain Can Be Freely Selected.

Feed Adjuster Into Timing Chain and Position On Camshafts.

Insert Central Bolts (1 and 2) On Adjustment Units Without Gaps.

Release Central Bolts (1 and 2) By 45°  .

Position Top Slide Rail (2) and Secure with Screws (1).

Tightening torque: 11 31 4AZ .

Position Special Tool 2 249 137 On Intake Camshaft and Secure with Screws (1).

Position Special Tool 2 249 140 On Special Tool 2 249 140 and Secure with Screws (1).

Screw In Special Tool 2 249 162 .

Pretension Timing Chain with Special Tool 2 249 162 .

Pretension Timing Chain with Special Tool 00 9 250 or 00 9 460 To 0.6 Nm  .

IMPORTANT: Loosen Central Bolts (1 and 2) By Maximum 45°.

Remove Special Tool 11 9 190 .

IMPORTANT: Crank Engine Back At Central Bolt Through 45°.

Position Engine with Special Tool 11 9 190 In Front of Special Tool 11 8 570 As Illustrated In The Graphic.

Join Central Bolt (1) of Intake Camshaft with Special Tool 11 4 350 .

Joining Torque 5 Nm  .

Join Central Bolt (1) of Exhaust Camshaft with Special Tool 11 4 350 .

Joining Torque 5 Nm  .

Remove Special Tool 11 9 190 .

Turn Engine At Central Bolt Further Until Special Tool 11 9 190 Gear Case Cover Can Be Positioned.

The Engine Is Now 150° Before TDC Firing Position Cylinder 1.

Installation Note: 

Tighten Central Bolts Beginning with the Intake Camshaft.

Insert Central Bolt (1) of Intake Camshaft with Torque.

Tightening torque of 30 Nm

Insert Central Bolt (1) of Exhaust Camshaft with Torque.

Tightening torque of 30 Nm

Secure Central Bolt (1) of Intake Camshaft with Special Tool 00 9 120 .

TORSION ANGLE ADJUSTMENT90°  .

Secure Central Bolt (1) of Exhaust Camshaft with Special Tool 00 9 120 .

TORSION ANGLE ADJUSTMENT90° 

Remove Special Tool 2 249 117 .

Check TIMING  Again.

Remove All Special Tools.
