11 36 046 Removing and installing/replacing intake and exhaust camshaft adjusters (N20, N26)

Special tools required: 

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

IMPORTANT: To release the central bolt, screw connection (7) on the exhaust camshaft is necessary.

IMPORTANT: To release the central bolt, screw connection (5) on the intake camshaft is necessary.

IMPORTANT: Use only special tool (1) to release central bolt of the VANOS unit.
Order number: 83 30 2 212 831

Release central bolt (1) of the exhaust camshaft adjuster.

Release central bolt (1) of the intake adjuster.

Release screws (1).

Tightening torque: 11 65 4AZ .

Release chain tensioner (2).

Tightening torque: 11 31 7AZ .

IMPORTANT: Have a cleaning cloth ready. A small quantity of engine oil will escape after the screw connection has been released.
Make sure no engine oil runs onto belt drive.

Installation note: 

Replace sealing ring.

Remove VANOS solenoid valve (1) of the exhaust side.

Remove pulse sensor wheel (2) of the exhaust side and set down on special tool 11 4 480 in neat order.

Order number: 83 30 0 495 105

Slightly lift timing chain (2) and remove exhaust camshaft adjuster (1) from exhaust camshaft.

Slightly tilt exhaust camshaft adjuster (1) and remove upward.

Remove VANOS solenoid valve (1) of the intake side.

Remove pulse sensor wheel (2) of the intake side and set down on special tool 11 4 480 in neat order.

Slightly lift timing chain (2) and remove intake adjuster (1) from intake camshaft.

Slightly tilt intake adjuster (1) and remove upward.

IMPORTANT: Risk of mixing up the intake and exhaust camshaft adjusters.
Danger of engine damage! 

Intake and exhaust camshaft adjusters are different.

VANOS is marked with EX for the exhaust camshaft.

VANOS is marked with IN for the intake camshaft.

Installation note: 

The camshaft sensor wheel can be optionally installed.

Turn camshaft sensor wheel until the retaining pins (1 and 2) match up on the special tool.

Move retaining pins (1 and 2) in direction of arrow.

Order number: 83 30 2 212 830

Secure special tool (1) with bolts.

Move central bolts (2 and 3) to the adjuster units to the system.

Order number: 83 30 2 212 830

11 9 340 Screw special tool into cylinder head.

Timing chain with special tool 11 9 340 and 00 9 250 or 00 9 460 to

0.6 Nm  pretension.

Secure central bolt (1) of intake adjuster with special tool.

Tightening torque: 11 36 1AZ .

Secure central bolt (1) of the exhaust camshaft adjuster with special tool.

Tightening torque: 11 36 1AZ .

Remove all special tools.

Install CHAIN TENSIONER .

Rev engine on the central bolt twice in the direction of engine rotation and verify TIMING .

Assemble engine.
