51 31 242 Replacing rubber frame (bottom) for rear window

Special tools required:

00 9 340

Open tailgate.

NOTE: Schematic diagram without tailgate for purposes of clarity.

IMPORTANT: Rubber frame (1) has a stainless steel profile insert (2).
Carefully pull off rubber frame (1) (rear window breakage).

NOTE: Tear-off lip (5) may be stuck to adhesive (6).
When rubber frame (1) is removed, tear-off lip (5) can tear off and remain in vehicle.
No tear-off lip (5) is fitted from version 03/2006 onwards.

NOTE: Thoroughly clean rear window with spirit in the installation area.
There must be no butyl residues on the rear window.

If replacing without removing the rear window:

For easier removal of the butyl residues, special tool 00 9 340 must be inserted under tension between the body flange and the rear window.

Wrap special tool 00 9 340 several times with a cleaning rag (cloth) soaked in spirit and use it to remove the butyl residues from between the body flange and the rear window.

Replacement of rubber frame with removed or new rear window:

Note the center mark (1) on the rubber frame (3) and rear window.

Position rubber frame (3) as per center mark on rear window and align at the sides.

Press down the rubber frame (3) from the center outwards by pressing down with firm thumb pressure along the entire length of the rear window.

Replacement of rubber frame without rear window removal:

NOTE: Rubber frame is fixed at the sides with window glass adhesive.
Observe NOTES when handling window glass adhesive.
Cut air vent (4) at angle to dimension (A).

A = 10 mm

Apply adhesive bead (1) on the left and right of the rubber frame (2) up to the fold (3) between the rear window and body.

NOTE: Adhesive bead (1) must not protrude over rear window.

If adhesive has managed to get onto the bridge (6), this area must be partially cut out.

Mark the center mark of the rear window by applying adhesive tape to the rear window.

Mark the center mark (1) of the rubber frame (3) with adhesive tape (2).

Position the rubber frame (3) above the center marks on the rear window and align at the sides.

Press down the rubber frame (3) from the center outwards by pressing down with firm thumb pressure along the entire length of the rear window.
