51 36 070 Removing and installing/replacing left or right rear side window

Special tools required: 

IMPORTANT: The "INSTRUCTIONS ON WINDOW BONDING " serve as the basis for this repair instructions and must be observed without fail.
Cover rear side panels with protective covers.
NOTE: Removal is performed with ROLL OUT 2000 . Only use an oscillating blade when replacing the windscreen.

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

Replacement: 

IMPORTANT: Tape off body in area of piercing point with fabric adhesive tape (risk of damage).

Push wire starter from ROLL OUT 2000  at line (1) through adhesive bead.

Only replace: 

Cut area (A) from the outside with a U-shape knife of 19.5 mm.

Cut area (B and C) from the inside with a strait knife with thrust roller.

For area (B) adjust the thrust roller to 30 mm.

Area (C) is cut without the thrust roller.

For area (C), which is not reachable with the knife, a scalpel for heavy duty demands must be used.

During the cutting procedure, a 2nd person must pull the side window at little in outwards direction using special tool 51 3 010 .

Only replace: 

Fit straight blade with adjustable roller (Sourcing Reference: BMW Parts Department) on tool and set dimension (X).

NOTE: Sharpen knife blade before every use on a running machine (even with new knife blades).

Tape off side window and body flange all round with fabric adhesive tape (e.g. Tesa).

Only replace: 

Secure outside of side window with adhesive tape.

Insert blade carefully between body and side window.

Guide web of blade parallel to side window. Cut through adhesive bead as close to body as possible.

Remove the side window with a special tool 51 3 010 .

Fitting 3 dual-lock tapes: 

Remove remainder of centering pin (1).

Remove rest of dual-lock tapes (2) and clean bonding area.

Stick new Dual Lock tapes (2) to raised marking on body flange (3).

Dual Lock tapes: 

1 = 20 x 10 mm

Dual lock tapes on side window must be matched to dual lock tapes on sheet metal flange.

IMPORTANT: In area (A) the adhesive bead lies close to the body edge and can come in contact with the roofliner during bonding if applicable (airbag, if applicable, cannot unfold correctly).
Insert foil for protection between the roofliner (1) and body edge (2) and pull it out approx. 30 min. after bonding.
Observe the position of the adhesive bead in area (A) (see Fig 8).

Cut air vent to size.

A = 7 ±1 mm

B= 11-2 mm

C= 4 mm

D= 2.5 mm

Overview for side window bonding, rear (E81/E82):

Attach two special tools 51 3 010 to tool trolley. Moisten suction faces and secure side window.

When reusing the existing side window, remove residual adhesive to 0.5 mm.

If necessary, remove remainder of dual lock tapes (5). Clean bonding surface and stick on new dual lock tapes (5).

Almost vertical part (B) of cement bead (1) must face PVC coating (6).

In area G, apply adhesive bead approx. 1 mm overlapping on PVC coating (6).

Spread bead joint (4) with special tool 00 9 322 .

Attach side window (1) with special tool 51 3 010 at bottom first with PVC spray-coating (2).

Fit centering pin in corresponding bore hole of new side window.

Align the PVC coating (2) of the side window (1) flush to the side wall (3).

Fold in side window (1) at top.

Snap side window (1) into dual-lock tapes.

Fix side window (1) in position with yellow plastic adhesive tape (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Department).

NOTE: The sawed off pin of the side window can rattle in the body and must be removed.

Release screws (1) and remove retaining plate (2).

Find the pin and remove.
