64 51 591 Removing and installing/replacing evaporator (High automatic A/C)
Follow safety instructions for handling refrigerant R 134a. Refer to 64 50 ... SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR HANDLING REFRIGERANT R 134A .
Follow safety instructions for handling refrigerant oil. Refer to 64 50 ... SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN HANDLING REFRIGERANT OIL (FOR REFRIGERANT R 134A) .
- Drain off air conditioner, refer to 64 50 009 DRAWING OFF, EVACUATING AND FILLING A/C SYSTEM (R 134A)
Restart engine only when A/C system has been correctly filled.
Comply with notes and instructions on handling fiber-optic cables. Refer to 61 00... NOTES ON HANDLING OPTICAL FIBERS .
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Disconnect battery negative lead, refer to 61 20 900 DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY NEGATIVE LEAD
- Remove heater, refer to 64 11 205 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING HEATER (BASIS AUTOMATIC A/C)
- Remove heating element, refer to 64 11 208 REPLACING HEATING ELEMENT (HIGH AUTOMATIC A/C)
After installation:
- Venting cooling system and checking for water leaks, refer to 17 00 009 CHECKING COOLING SYSTEM FOR LEAKS (N62)
If necessary, clean/align cooling fins with slat comb.
Remove retainers (1).
Unlock retaining lugs (2) in direction of arrow and remove defroster vents (3) towards top.
Installation:
Check retaining lugs (1) of defroster vent (2), replace defroster vent if necessary.
Retaining lugs (1) of defroster vents must snap audibly into place.
Disconnect plug connection (1).
Release screws (2).
Unclip control lever for fresh air flap (3).
Feed out servomotor bracket (4).
Installation:
Guide (1) of control lever for recirculating air flap (2) must be exactly seated in mounting (3) of shutter cassette (4).
Release screws (1).
Feed out shutter cassette (2) in direction of arrow.
Release screws (1).
Unlock arrester hook (2) and remove cover for expansion valve (3).
Disconnect plug connection (1).
Unclip linkage (2 3) in direction of arrow.
Release screws (1).
Remove upper housing section of heater (2) in direction of arrow.
Detach retainers (1) from heater housing (2).
Pull evaporator (1) in direction of arrow out of heater housing (2).
