63 21 183 Removing and installing/replacing left or right rear light (on tailgate)

Special tools required: 

IMPORTANT: Read and comply with notes on protection against electrostatic damage (ESD PROTECTION) .

Necessary preliminary tasks 

NOTE: For purposes of clarity, tailgate trim panel is shown removed.

Disconnect plug connection (1).

Release nut (2) and remove with retaining bracket (3).

Tightening torque 63 21 3AZ .

IMPORTANT: Risk of damage!
Tape off tailgate with suitable protective film (1).

Lever out rear light (2) with special tool 00 9 318 in direction of arrow.

Installation note: 

Make sure that gap dimension is uniform all round between rear light (2) and tailgate.

Installation note: 

Position tabs (1) of rear light exactly over side edge of tailgate.

REMOVE BUTYL REMNANTS FROM TAILGATE.

Clean bonding surfaces of rear light (2) and tailgate with brake cleaner (BMW Parts Department 2 154 780) and allow to dry.

Installation note: 

Replace the Butyl gasket with a sealing frame:

Make sure sealing frame (2) is correctly seated.

If necessary, replace SEALING FRAME  (2).

Replacement: 

If necessary, remove BULBS .
