Use only the approved transmission fluid . See 3.0 APPROVED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUIDS FOR INITIAL FILLINGS AND CORRECTING FLUID LEVELS .
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the automatic transmission!
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Disconnect battery . See 12 00 ... INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY .
- Remove heater bulkhead (except M57). See 51 71 085 REMOVING AND INSTALLING CENTER OF ASSEMBLY COMPARTMENT BULKHEAD .
- Hold engine in transmission removal position.
- N73/M57: Position transmission lifter underneath.
- All others: with special tool 00 0 200
- Remove exhaust system
. See EXHAUST SYSTEM - REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS -- ALPINA
.
- M57: after catalytic converter
- All others: complete
- Remove oxygen monitor sensors (except M57). See 78 EMISSION CONTROL, OXYG .
- Remove front engine underguard
- Remove reinforcement plate
. See 31 10 010 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING REINFORCEMENT PLATE
.
Installation:
Important notes on installation are described in this work step.
Release screws and remove transmission underbody protection (1).
Remove heat shields (1) and (2).
Only M57:
Release screws and remove underbody protection (1).
Unfasten nut.
Remove cable (1).
Installation:
Adjust cable
- Release nut
- Adjust cable by means of holder (2)
- Spacing A = 1 mm
M67 only:
- Release screws.
- Remove holder.
Release screw (1).
Pull hydraulic lines (2) to transmission fluid cooler out of transmission housing.
N73 only: Release holder for oil lines on engine.
Installation:
Replace sealing rings.
BMW ALPINA B7 only
Pay attention to thermostat (2) when removing hydraulic lines (1)
Crank engine at central bolt in direction of rotation until a torque converter retaining screw is visible in opening.
Release retaining screws with special tool 24 1 110 .
Crank engine further and release remaining 3 bolts.
Tightening torque. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - TIGHTENING TORQUES .
Unlock plug (1) and disconnect (except M57).
Unclip cable holder (1) from transmission housing (except M57).
Unclip cable from transmission.
Perform following tasks:
- Unlock and disconnect plug (1) by turning.
- Insert special tool 24 2 390 in sealing sleeve.
The operations are described in Replacing mechatronics (Important: Read and comply with important note!). See 24 34 561 REPLACING MECHATRONICS (GA6HP26Z/6HP32Z) .
Supporting transmission:
Support with special tools 24 5 306 , 24 5 301 and 00 2 03 0.
Set up special tool 24 5 306:
- All supports to "B".
- Supports 3 and 4 are at rear of transmission.
- Support lettering points forwards.
Securing torque converter against slipping out:
Install special tool 24 4 131 (basic unit) with corresponding blades in opening of transmission housing and clamp:
Blades for
- M54, N62 24 4 132
Blades for
- M67, M67TU 24 4 132 turned 180° screwed
Prepare special tool 24 4 161 (1) with corresponding shaped sections:
Shaped section for
- 2 N73 24 4 162
- 3 M57TU, M57T2 24 4 163
Insert special tool 24 4 160 into opening of transmission housing and clamp gently with screw (1).
Twist in screw (2) and clamp down.
Then tighten down screw (1) briefly.
Further tasks:
Remove transmission cross-member . See 22 32 050 REPLACING CROSS-MEMBER FOR TRANSMISSION MOUNTING .
Tightening torque. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - TIGHTENING TORQUES .
N73 only:
Release holder so that lines of power steering (1) do not collide with line from transmission oil cooler (2).
Remove propeller shaft:
- Remove propeller shaft from transmission.
- Release center bearing.
- Tie propeller shaft to one side.
If necessary, unlock or lock transmission lock.
Do not lower transmission too far, and take car to avoid collisions, e.g.:
- M57: screws for catalytic converter.
Unfasten screws.
Tightening torque. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - TIGHTENING TORQUES .
Installation:
Check that dowel sleeves are correctly seated.
Replace damaged dowel sleeves.
Installation:
Bore (1) in driving disk must be accessible from opening on engine oil pan.
Installation:
Rotate torque converter until bore in torque converter is flush with bore in driving disk.
Flange automatic transmission to engine.
