72 12 060 Removing And Installing/Replacing Left Or Right Head Airbag

Incorrect handling can activate airbag and cause injury.
A damaged head airbag must be replaced.
A damaged head airbag exhibits an impaired protective function and in extreme cases loses its protective function altogether.

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Disconnect battery negative lead . See12 00... INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY .
Remove roofliner . See 51 44 013 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING ROOFLINER (VERSION WITH PANORAMA SUNROOF) .
Follow instructions for unlocking and locking airbag plug connection. See 72 12 ... UNLOCKING/LOCKING AIRBAG PLUG CONNECTIONS .

Installation summary, retaining elements, head airbag:

IMPORTANT: When removing head airbag, do not damage

Head airbag
Windscreen
Retaining clips
Trim panels

Release screw (1) on A-pillar.

Tightening torque. See PARTS AND ACCESSORIES - TIGHTENING TORQUES - X5 .

Release retaining screws (2).

Tightening torque. See PARTS AND ACCESSORIES - TIGHTENING TORQUES - X5 .

Remove deformation plate (3).

Release screw (1).

Installation:

Folding pack is under tab washer.

Unlock and disconnect plug (3) for gas generator (2). See 72 12 ... UNLOCKING/LOCKING AIRBAG PLUG CONNECTIONS .

Release screws (1).

Tightening torque. See PARTS AND ACCESSORIES - TIGHTENING TORQUES - X5 .

Remove gas generator (2) in direction of arrow.

Installation:

Gas generator is coded against incorrect installation.
