11 37 008 Removing and Installing/Replacing Right Eccentric Shaft (N73)

(Cylinders 1 to 6)

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

NOTE: Removal of eccentric shaft is described separately from installation.
IMPORTANT: Eccentric shafts (1 to 6) and (7 to 12) are different and must not be mixed up.
Magnet wheel is highly magnetic and must be protected against metal chips with a plastic bag.

Carefully tilt bearing shell (1) to one side and simultaneously remove towards top.

NOTE: The work steps are only described on one eccentric shaft bearing.

The procedure is identical for the other eccentric shaft bearings.

Remove eccentric shaft (1).

NOTE: (Illustrations show N62).

Release screw and remove magnet wheel (1).

IMPORTANT: Magnet wheel (1) is extremely magnetic.
After removal, place magnet wheel (1) in a plastic bag to protect it against metal chips.

Removal of lever (2) with roller (if necessary):

Grip lever (2) with roller at dihedral.

Release screw (1) and remove lever (2) with roller from eccentric shaft.

IMPORTANT: Levers with rollers of cylinders 1 to 6 and 7 to 12 are different and must not be mixed up.

Carefully press needle bearing (1) apart at split position only to such an extent that it can be removed from eccentric shaft.

IMPORTANT: Needle bearing (1) can break very easily.

Designation: 

Lever (1) for cylinders 1 - 6.

Lever (2) for cylinders 7 - 12.

IMPORTANT: Lever with roller is identical to (N62).
They are different and must not be mixed up.
Markings 1 to 4 are for cylinders 1 to 6.
Markings 5 to 8 are for cylinders 7 to 12.

Secure lever (1) with lug in eccentric shaft groove.

Tighten screw (2).

Secure magnet wheel (1) with lug in eccentric shaft groove.

IMPORTANT: Replace screws.
Only install original antimagnetic screw (2).

Insert screw (2) and tighten down.

Installation: 

Tightening torque 11 37 1AZ. See 11 37 VARIABLE VALVE GEAR

Install bearing shells (1) in such a way that ends of bearing shells (1) face each other as shown in illustration.

NOTE: Always replace bearing shells and needle bearings together.

Install bearing shell (1) in bearing bracket and secure in bore (2).

NOTE: Apply a light coat of engine oil to bearing shells (1) when installing.

Illustrations show N62.

Insert eccentric shaft (2).

Installation: 

Lever (1) with roller points upwards in assembly position.

Machined curvature of eccentric points inwards.

IMPORTANT: Eccentric shafts 1 to 6 and 7 to 12 are different and must not be mixed up.

Install bearing shells (1).

Installation: 

Apply a light coat of engine oil to bearing shells (1) when installing.

Bearing shells (1) must snap audibly into place.

Check correct position of bearing shells (1).

Install right inlet camshaft (1 to 6).

Assemble engine.
