12 41 020 Removing and installing/replacing starter motor (N62, N62TU)

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

• Switch off ignition
• Follow instructions for disconnecting and connecting battery  

  Disconnect battery negative lead .

• Remove reinforcement plate  . See 31 10 010 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING REINFORCEMENT PLATE .
• E60/E63/64/E65/E66 only:  Remove right exhaust manifold  . See 18 40 020 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING RIGHT EXHAUST MANIFOLD (N62, N62TU) .

Release screw and nut.

Remove heat shield (1).

Unfasten nut.

Tightening torque 12 41 4AZ  . See 12 41 STARTER AND MOUNTING PARTS .

Unlock plug (1) and remove.

Release screws and pull starter motor out of transmission mounting and remove.

Tightening torque 12 41 1AZ  . See 12 41 STARTER AND MOUNTING PARTS .

Installation: 

Check starter pinion and ring gear for damage, replace damaged parts if necessary.
