64 11 206 Removing and Installing/Replacing Heater

Refrigerant circuit is under high pressure!

Avoid contact with refrigerant and refrigerant oil.

IMPORTANT:

Risk of damage!

Restart engine only when A/C system has been correctly filled.

NOTE: If A/C system is opened for more than 24 hours:Replace desiccant insert for A/C system . See 64 53 515 Replacing Desiccant Insert For A/C System .

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Draw off refrigerant from A/C system . Refer to 64 50 009 Drawing Off, Evacuating And Filling A/C System (R134a) .
Remove lower section of microfilter housing . Refer to 64 31 092 Removing and Installing/Replacing Microfilter Housing (Lower Section) .
Remove expansion valve . Refer to 64 51 520 Removing and Installing Or Replacing Expansion Valve .
Remove instrument panel trim . Refer to 51 45 030 REMOVING AND INSTALLING INSTRUMENT PANEL TRIM (Coupe) and/or 51 45 030 REMOVING AND INSTALLING INSTRUMENT PANEL TRIM (Convertible).
Lower steering column until complete steering column rests on driver seat. It is not necessary to remove steering column. Refer to 32 31 090 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING STEERING COLUMN .
Disconnect plug connection for control unit for Car Access System. See 61 35 015 REMOVING AND INSTALLING (REPLACING) CONTROL UNIT FOR CAR ACCESS SYSTEM (Coupe) and/or 61 35 015 REMOVING AND INSTALLING (REPLACING) CONTROL UNIT FOR CAR ACCESS SYSTEM (Convertible).

WARNING: To avoid injury, cover holder (1) on support tube (2).

Release cover cap (1) from bulkhead (2).

Release screw (1).

Tightening torque 64 11 1AZ, see 64 11 HOUSING, HEATER/AIR CONDITIONER .

Detach right footwell heating duct (1) in area (2) in direction of arrow.

Detach right footwell heating duct (1) with adapter (3) from heater/air conditioner and remove in direction of arrow from right rear compartment heating duct (4).

Detach left footwell heating duct (1) in area (2) in direction of arrow.

Detach left footwell heating duct (1) with adapter (3) from heater/air conditioner and remove in direction of arrow from left rear compartment heating duct (4).

Installation:

Make sure retainer (2) is correctly seated on left/right footwell heating duct (1).

Insert footwell heating duct (1) with adapter (3) in rear compartment heating duct (4).

Attach footwell heating duct (1) in area (4) to heater/air conditioner. Make sure assembly is locked exactly at point (5).

Release clamp (1) on water hoses. Pull off water hoses from heating unit.

Unscrew nuts (2).

Feed out media passage sealing plate (3) and associated rubber grommet.

IMPORTANT: Make sure remaining coolant is removed completely.

Installation:

Makes sure media passage sealing plate and associated rubber grommet are correctly seated.

IMPORTANT: Carefully blow through aluminum double pipe to remove remaining coolant from heat exchanger for heating system.

Installation:

Vent cooling system and check for leaks . See 17 00 039 VENTING COOLING SYSTEM AND CHECKING FOR WATER LEAKS (N52/ N52K/ N51/ N53) .

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Disconnect all necessary cable ties on support tube.
Release wiring harnesses/cable ducts and lay to one side.
If necessary, remove control units/disconnect plug connections.

Installation:

Make sure wiring harnesses/cable ducts are correctly routed and secured.

Release screw (1) of heater on support tube (2).

Tightening torque, see 51 71 6AZ in 51 71 SEALS AND LOOSE BODY PARTS .

Detach wiring harness (3) from support tube (2).

Release screws (1) of heater on support tube (2).

Tightening torque, see 64 11 6AZ in 64 11 HOUSING, HEATER/AIR CONDITIONER .

Release nuts (1) on right on support tube (2).

Detach support tube (2) and remove from vehicle with assistance of a second person.

Remove heater.

Installation:

Make sure heater (1) is correctly seated.

Installation:

Make sure condensate drain (1) is correctly seated in grommet (2).

Replacement: Effective 09/2009, vehicles with SA 606 (Navigation Business) or SA 609 (Navigation Professional) will no longer have vent hose (1) on heater (2). In addition, vehicles manufactured up to 09/2009 will no longer require vent hose (1) for parts replacement!
