Removal & Installation: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 10 other vehicles, including the 2005 BMW 330xi, 2005 BMW 325xi, 2004 BMW 330xi, 2004 BMW 325xi, and 2003 BMW 330xi. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: When joining up engine and transmission, ensure ease of movement of torque converter.
  1. Pay attention to adapter sleeves (1 and 2). See Fig 1 . Withdraw damaged adapter sleeves from transmission housing. Insert new adapter sleeves into engine block.
  2. The sheet metal flywheel is equipped with three recesses for the torque converter retaining lugs. When joining together engine and transmission, the three retaining lugs on the torque converter must be aligned with the three recesses in the sheet metal flywheel. See Fig 2 . Failure to comply with this requirement leads to secondary damage on the automatic transmission. The torque converter or engine is not able to spin and would cause damage.
  3. Bore on driver must point to center of aperture in cover plate. See Fig 3 .
  4. Twist torque converter on transmission until bores on lugs point to center of bore on flywheel. Screw Special Tool (24 2 300) into lug. See Fig 4 .
  5. Raise automatic transmission until bore on driver is reached. Carefully insert transmission into bore on driver with Special Tool (24 2 300). See Fig 5 . Attach transmission case to engine flange. Remove Special Tool (24 2 300) from lug towards front.
  6. Tighten transmission-to-engine screws to specification. See Figure . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  7. Use only original screws. Tighten torque converter-to-flywheel screws to specification. See Figure . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  8. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Replace sealing rings on hydraulic lines (2) to oil cooler. See Figure .
  9. When installing transfer case, pay attention to dowel sleeves (1). See Fig 6 . Replace damaged adapter sleeves. Apply a thin coat of WEICON ANTISIEZE or equivalent grease to splines. Tighten transfer case screws-to-transmission to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  10. Tighten screws of transmission cross-member-to-rubber mounts and transmission cross-member-to-body to specification. See Figure . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  11. Install front propeller shaft and tighten screws to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  12. Remove butylene tape already attached to center bearing. Clean adhesive area on center bearing and on body. Then coat adhesive area on body with mineral oil. This coating with oil is necessary to facilitate insertion of the sticky butylene tape in the propeller shaft tunnel. This prevents the butylene tape from being deformed. Pull off cover tape from butylene tape on both sides. Stick butylene tape (1) to outside of center bearing (2). See Fig 7 . Press center bearing (2) into transmission tunnel. See Fig 8 .
  13. Tighten nuts of center mount-to-body to specification. See Figure . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  14. Tighten nuts of flexible disk-to-propeller shaft and transmission output flange to specification. See Figure . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  15. Check cable for ease of movement. Move selector lever to Park. Grip clamping sleeve (1). See Fig 9 . Slacken nut (2). Press selector lever (3) forwards into park position. Press cable (4) in direction of arrow and release again. Grip clamping sleeve (1). Tighten down nut (2) to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Move selector lever to park position. Check whether parking gear is engaged by turning propeller shaft.
  16. After completion of work, check transmission fluid level. Connect battery.
