12 42 500 Removing and installing or replacing battery positive lead (between starter, alternator and battery positive support point) (M73)

Observe safety instructions for handling vehicle battery.

Switch off ignition.

Remove battery negative line.

Remove complete left intake filter housing.

Unfasten cable connector.

Remove centre of splash guard.

Disconnect alternator connections.

Connections illustrated here on removed alternator.

Unfasten plug connection (1).

Unfasten nut (2).

Tightening torque, refer to ENGINE - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Unscrew and remove splash guard.

Unfasten screw on retaining clip on engine mounting arm.

Unfasten screws on guide tube on oil pan.

Unfasten screws from retaining plate on front axle support, unclip line and remove retaining plate.

Unfasten screws and remove heat baffle plate.

Unfasten bracket for positive battery lead on crankcase.

Remove right exhaust pipes, refer to 18 31 015 REMOVING AND INSTALLING / REPLACING RIGHT EXHAUST TAILPIPES (M73) .

Unfasten nuts for heat baffle plate on starter motor.

Unfasten top screw on heat baffle plate for starter motor.

Unfasten bottom screw of heat baffle plate for starter motor, remove heat baffle plate.

Unfasten connection for positive battery lead on starter motor. Tightening torque, refer to ENGINE - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Impact protection for battery positive wire on floor of vehicle. Unfasten screws.

Remove impact protector.

Lift rubber cap off positive battery support point on floor assembly.

Unfasten nut.

Remove wiring harness.
