Transmission, Removing: Removing
-- Prepare the Support : T90003 .
-- The bracket -arrow- must be turned so that the longer side faces upward.
-- Secure the vehicle from rolling.
Conditions
- Parking brake released
- Selector lever in "N"
Risk of damaging the transmission by mixing ATF and transmission fluid (MTF) through the same bleeder.
- The transmission filled with ATF and (MTF) transmission fluid must be tilted a maximum of 15° in lateral and longitudinal direction.
-- Comply with the angle of inclination.
If the transmission is opened for the repair:
-- Drain the ATF. Refer to ATF, Draining and Filling .
-- Drain the transmission fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid, Draining and Filling

-- Lock the ATF pump and drain the hydraulic pressure reservoir. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC ENTRY .
-- Position and remove the wheels in straight-ahead position.
-- Switch the ignition off.
-- Disconnect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .
-- Remove the engine cover. Refer to ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING (4 CYL) , or ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING (6 CYL) .
-- Remove the subframe crossbrace. Refer to SUBFRAME CROSSBRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the front exhaust pipe. Refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER (4 CYL) , or OVERVIEW - MUFFLER (6 CYL) .
-- Remove the plenum chamber bulkhead. Refer to PLENUM CHAMBER BULKHEAD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the air filter housing. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING (4 CYL) , or AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING (6 CYL) .
-- Loosen the screw-type clamp -arrow- for the particulate filter.
There is a risk of injury from flying soot particles.
Irritation and injury to skin and eyes possible.
- Wear protective eyewear.
- Wear safety gloves.
-- Loosen the screw-type clamps -arrows-, and remove the EGR pipe -1-.
-- Remove the bolts -5- and nuts -3-, and remove the bracket -2-.
-- Remove the bolts -2 through 5- connecting the engine to the transmission that are accessible from above.
AWD Vehicles:
-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to the appropriate service information .
Continuation for all vehicles
-- To catch escaping coolant, place a cloth underneath.
-- Loosen the hose clamps -arrows- and then disconnect and remove the coolant hoses with Hose Clamps - Up To 25mm :3094 .
-- Install the right tower brace. Refer to TOWER BRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Tie up the particulate filter as shown using the Tensioning Strap :T10038 .
-- Support the engine in the installation position. Refer to ENGINE, SUPPORTING IN INSTALLATION POSITION (4 CYL) , or ENGINE, SUPPORTING IN INSTALLATION POSITION (6 CYL) .
-- Remove the left subframe shield. Refer to SUBFRAME SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and free up the parking lock emergency release cable -1-.
-- Remove the right drive axle cover. Refer to OVERVIEW - FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER .
-- Remove the left and right drive axle from the transmission flange shaft and tie it up toward the rear. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear and then push together. Refer to STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the lower cover -1- from the transmission -arrow-.
-- Position the Wrench - 21mm :T40263 and Adapter :T40405 on the vibration damper.
Conditions
- The recess -2- must align with the "TDC" marking -1- on the vibration damper.
-- Turn the crankshaft only in the direction of engine rotation -arrow-.
-- Counterhold the crankshaft on the vibration damper.
-- Counterhold the crankshaft on the vibration damper.
-- Remove three bolts -arrow- on the drive plate -1-.
Conditions
- Turn the crankshaft an additional 120° in the direction of engine rotation.
Risk of destroying due to electrostatic charge.
- Do not touch the connector terminals.
- Touch a grounded object (for example the hoist) and discharge any static electricity.
-- Disconnect the connectors.
-- Remove the bolt -1- using the Torque Wrench 1332 Insert - Ring Wrench - 16mm :V.A.G 1332/14 and the Torque Wrench Adapter :VAS 6948 .
-- Remove the starter slightly from the transmission and leave it in the installation position.
-- Remove the remaining bolts -6 through 9- on the transmission connection to the engine.
-- Position the Engine and Gearbox Jack :VAS 6931 -1- with the prepared Gearbox Support :T40173A -2- on the bottom on the transmission using the Tensioning Strap :T10523 -3-, as shown in the illustration below.
-- Remove the tunnel crossmember. Refer to Tunnel Crossmember, Removing and Installing .
-- Push the transmission off the engine and lower it carefully using the Engine and Gearbox Jack :VAS 6931 and pay attention to the wires while doing so.
-- Prepare the Support : T90003 .
-- The bracket -arrow- must be turned so that the longer side faces upward.
-- Secure the vehicle from rolling.

-- Remove the emissions control module. Refer to Emissions Control System (4 CYL) , or Emissions Control System (6 CYL) .
-- Remove the bolt -arrow- from the catalytic converter bracket.
Continuation for all vehicles
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and free up the parking lock emergency release cable -1-. (different versions)
-- Remove the bolts -2 through 5- connecting the engine to the transmission that are accessible from above.
AWD Vehicles:
-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to the appropriate service information .
Continuation for all vehicles
-- Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear and then push together. Refer to STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- for the coolant pipe for the transmission.
-- Loosen the hose clamps -1 and 2- and then disconnect and remove the coolant hoses with Hose Clamps - Up To 25mm :3094 .
-- Support the engine in the installation position. Refer to ENGINE, SUPPORTING IN INSTALLATION POSITION (4 CYL) , or ENGINE, SUPPORTING IN INSTALLATION POSITION (6 CYL) .
-- Remove the left and right drive axle cover. Refer to OVERVIEW - FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER .
-- Remove the subframe shield under the left drive axle. Refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME .
-- Remove the lower cover -1- from the transmission -arrow-.
2.0 TFSI, 3.0 TDI
-- Turn the crankshaft only in the direction of engine rotation -arrow-.

2.0 TDI through 2016
-- Turn the crankshaft only in the direction of engine rotation -arrow-.

2.0 TDI from 2016
-- Only turn the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation (clockwise).

Vehicles with 6-cylinder engine
-- Counterhold the crankshaft on the vibration damper.
-- Remove the six bolts -arrow- on the drive plate -1-.
Conditions
- Turn the crankshaft an additional 60° the direction of engine rotation.

Vehicles with 4-Cylinder Engine
-- Counterhold the crankshaft on the vibration damper.
-- Remove three bolts -arrow- on the drive plate -1-.
Conditions
- Turn the crankshaft an additional 120° in the direction of engine rotation.

-- Remove the right drive axle heat shield. Refer to DRIVE AXLE HEAT SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the left and right drive axle from the transmission flange shaft and tie it up. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the bolt -2- and move the coolant hose to the side.
Risk of destroying due to electrostatic charge.

-- Disconnect the connectors.
Vehicle with 1.4 TFSI or 3.0 TDI:
-- Insert the Strut :T40335 into the left and right sides of the subframe. If necessary, adjust the brace at the knurled handle -1-.
-- Secure the left and right brace with a splint -arrow-.
-- Support the steering gear -2- with a foam mat -1- placed between it and the Engine and Gearbox Jack :VAS 6931 .
Conditions
- Do not grab the boots when removing the steering gear.
-- Remove the Locating Pins for Steering Box Locating Pins for Steering Box :T40334 on the left and right side.
-- Lower the steering gear and push slightly forward.
Continuation for all vehicles
-- Remove the bolts -6 through 10- that connect the transmission to the engine.
-- Position the Engine and Gearbox Jack :VAS 6931 -1- with the prepared Support :T40173A -2- on the bottom of the transmission and secure it with the Tensioning Strap :T10523 -3-.
-- Remove the tunnel crossmember. Refer to Tunnel Crossmember, Removing and Installing .
-- Remove the bolt -1- with Torque Wrench 1332 Insert - Ring Wrench - 16mm :V.A.G 1332/14 and Torque Wrench Adapter :VAS 6948 remove in stages and remove the transmission in stages from the engine.
-- Push the transmission off the engine and lower it carefully, using the Engine and Gearbox Jack :VAS 6931 , while doing so pay attention to wires and the selective catalytic reduction line.
