Coolant, Draining
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Cooling System Service Station:VAS 531 011
- Hose Clamps - Up To 40mm:3093
- Spring-Type Clip Pliers:VAS 6891
Risk of damage for high-voltage components overheating.
- If the coolant is drained do not perform the HV charging process.
- Mark the vehicle respectively.
Procedure
Condition
- The cooling system must be completely drained.
- Pay attention to the operating instructions for the Cooling System Service Station:VAS 531 011 .
Preliminary Work
-- Make sure that in the "DRAIN" -container from the Cooling System Service Station:VAS 531 011 can hold 20 liters of coolant.
Tip
If the cooling system should be immediately refilled after draining, the Cooling System Service Station:VAS 531 011 should be refilled with new coolant before starting. Refer to Cooling System, Filling .
-- End the charging process.
-- Perform the "Opening the electric activated valves for cooling system for discharging and filling, opening" function using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester. Refer to Diagnostic Entry .
-- Remove the front plenum chamber cover. Refer to PLENUM CHAMBER COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Push the front wheels to the right.
-- Remove the left wheel spoiler. Refer to OVERVIEW - FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER .
-- Loosen the rear area of the left front wheel housing liner and push toward the front. Refer to OVERVIEW - FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER .
-- Remove the front and rear underbody trim panel. Refer to OVERVIEW - UNDERBODY TRIM PANELS .
The cooling system can be under pressure. Risk of scalding by hot steam and hot coolant.
Possibility of scalding the skin and other parts of the body.
- Wear safety gloves.
- Wear protective eyewear.
- Reduce the pressure: cover the coolant expansion tank cap with a suitable towel and carefully open.
-- Open the coolant expansion tank cap -arrow-.
-- Connect the adapter from the Cooling System Service Station:VAS 531 011 on the coolant expansion tank and connect the service connection on the adapter.
Condition
- The service hose may not be separated from the cooling system service station.
- The drained coolant quantity should be 16 to 17 liters.
Draining the coolant on the rear axle final drive connector coupling.
-- Free up the connector coupling on the bracket -4-.
-- Position the Cooling System Service Station:VAS 531 011 for catching the coolant under the separating point.
-- Select "vehicle maintenance" in the main menu and select "system, draining".
-- Start "draining process".
-- Lift the clip -2-, detach the coolant hose and allow the coolant to drain.
-- Seal the coolant hose -3- using the Hose Clamps - Up To 40mm:3093 .
Tip
Hold the coolant hose -1- when draining in the funnel from the :VAS 531 011 .
-- Select the procedure "system, draining".
-- Follow the instructions on the display and blow out the coolant, until the coolant only drips out or air comes out.
-- If necessary, restart the procedure "system, draining".
-- Remove the hose clamp on the coolant hose -3- and seal the coolant hose -1-.
Tip
Hold the coolant hose -3- when draining in the funnel from the :VAS 531 011 .
-- Restart the "system, draining" procedure.
-- Follow the instructions on the display and blow out the coolant, until the coolant only drips out or air comes out.
-- If necessary, restart the procedure "system, draining".
-- Connect the connector coupling. Refer to OVERVIEW - RADIATOR/RADIATOR FAN .
-- Remove the hose clamp.
Drain the coolant on the high-voltage battery feed
-- Cover the surrounding components with foil.
-- Position the Cooling System Service Station:VAS 531 011 for catching the coolant under the separating point.
-- Lift the clamp -2- and remove the coolant hose from the supports for the high-voltage battery and let the coolant drain.
-- Seal the coolant hose -1- using the Hose Clamps - Up To 40mm:3093 .
Tip
To make draining easier hold an angled coolant hose on the connection opening for example 06B 121 101 E (is already used for the leak detection in the high-voltage battery). Alternatively a hose with a 16 mm outer diameter can be inserted in the connections.
Draining the coolant in the left front radiator
-- Position the Cooling System Service Station:VAS 531 011 for catching the coolant under the separating point.
-- Loosen the hose clamp -2- with Spring-Type Clip Pliers:VAS 6891 , remove the coolant hose -1- and let the coolant drain.
-- Seal the coolant hose -1- using the Hose Clamps - Up To 40mm:3093 .
