Transmission, Removing

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

• Transmission Support :3282 
• Transmission Support - Pins 29 :3282/29 
• Engine Bung Set :VAS6122 
• Engine and Gearbox Jack :VAS6931 
• Tensioning Strap :T10038  (quantity: 2)
• Insert Tool - 18mm :T10509  or :T10179 
• Wrench - 21mm :T40263 
• Adapter :T40314 

Removing 

-- Remove the battery and battery tray. Refer to Battery .

-- Remove the subframe without steering gear. Refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME .

-- Remove the bevel box. Refer to BEVEL BOX, REMOVING .

-- Remove the left front wheel housing liner. Refer to OVERVIEW - FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER .

-- Loosen the hose clamp -1- and remove the air duct hose from the charge air cooler.

-- Free up the coolant hose.

-- Free up the wiring harnesses -1 and 2- on the air duct pipe.

-- Loosen the screw-type clamp -4-.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the air duct pipe.

-- Disconnect the connector -1-.

-- Remove the secondary air injection hose -2- by pressing the release buttons on both sides.

-- Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Pry the selector lever cable -1- off the selector shaft lever -2- using for example an open end wrench.

-- Disconnect the connector -6- for the Multifunction Transmission Range Switch -F125- and free up the wire on the bracket.

-- Remove the bolts -5- for the cable bracket -4-. Do not remove the lock washer -3-.

-- Disengage the selector lever cable -1- from the bracket clip -2-.

Tip:

Secure the selector lever cable to a suitable position on the body using a cable tie, for example.

-- Remove the bolts -1, 2 and 3- connecting the transmission to the engine using the :T10179  .

-- To discharge any static electricity, touch the ground with a hand (without gloves).

-- Disconnect the connector -2-.

-- To catch escaping ATF, place a cloth underneath.

-- Remove the bolt -1- and disconnect the ATF lines.

-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the :VAS6122  .

-- Remove the left drive axle from the transmission. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Use the :T40263  , :T40314  and a 24mm wrench to turn the crankshaft -arrow- only until the respective bolt is accessible.

-- Remove the six nuts -arrow- for the torque converter -1- while turning the crankshaft an additional 60°.

-- Support the engine in the installation position. Refer to ENGINE, SUPPORTING IN INSTALLATION POSITION .

-- Completely remove the bolts -arrows- for the transmission mount.

-- Using the spindles on the :10-222B  , lower the engine to dimension -a-.

• Dimension -a- = approximately 45 mm

The transmission is separated from the engine in this position.

-- Place the :3282  -A- on the :VAS6931  -B-.

Install the :3282  on the transmission as follows with the mounting elements:

• Position the Engine and Gearbox Jack with Transmission Support under the transmission -1- so that the spindle -left arrow- points forward in the direction of travel.
• The spindle -right arrow- points in the direction of travel to the left.
• Insert the Mounts -C- as shown in the groove all the way around the oil pan.
• Lock the Pin -D- in the recess on the front right side of the transmission.

-- Install the :3282/29  in the rear hole for the pendulum support bolt on the transmission.

-- Support the transmission by carefully lifting it using the Engine and Gearbox Jack.

-- Remove the remaining bolts for the transmission/engine connection.

-- Pry the transmission -3- off the engine while pushing the torque converter -1- against the transmission -arrow- using, for example, a screwdriver -2-.

-- Carefully drain the transmission while making sure there is clearance to other components.

-- After the removing the transmission, secure the torque converter from falling. Refer to Fig 6.
