-- Move the steering wheel as far to the rear and down as possible. Use the full steering column adjustment range for this.
-- Move the front seats all the way back and tilt backrests 45°.
-- Remove the center console. Refer to CENTER CONSOLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Risk of injury due to involuntary deployment.
- Pay attention to the safety precautions when working with pyrotechnic components. Refer to SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING WITH PYROTECHNIC COMPONENTS .
-- Disconnect the battery ground cable when the ignition is turned on. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .
-- Remove the driver side airbag unit. Refer to AIRBAG UNIT WITH IGNITER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the steering wheel. Refer to STEERING WHEEL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the upper steering column trim panel. Refer to UPPER STEERING COLUMN TRIM PANEL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the lower steering column trim panel. Refer to LOWER STEERING COLUMN TRIM PANEL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the steering column switch. Refer to STEERING COLUMN SWITCH MODULE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the instrument panel side covers. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL SIDE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the A-pillar upper trim panels. Refer to A-PILLAR TRIM PANEL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the instrument panel cover on the driver side. Refer to DRIVER SIDE INSTRUMENT PANEL COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the glove compartment. Refer to GLOVE COMPARTMENT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the driver side/front passenger side decorative trim for the instrument panel. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL DECORATIVE TRIM, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the A/C display control head trim. Refer to DISPLAY CONTROL HEAD TRIM, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the outer instrument panel vent. Refer to OUTER INSTRUMENT PANEL VENT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the center and outer front passenger side vent. Refer to CENTER VENT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- If installed, remove the instrument cluster trim. Refer to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TRIM, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the instrument cluster. Refer to OVERVIEW - INSTRUMENT CLUSTER .
-- Remove the Front Information Display Control Head -J685-. Refer to COMPONENT LOCATION OVERVIEW - INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM .
-- Remove the center speaker trim. Refer to SPEAKER TRIM, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the center speaker trim mount. Refer to CENTER SPEAKER TRIM, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- If installed, remove the center speaker in the instrument panel. Refer to COMPONENT LOCATION OVERVIEW - SOUND SYSTEM .
-- If installed, remove the upper cover -2- with the Wedge :T10383/1 from the instrument panel -1-.
Risk of injury due to involuntary deployment.
- Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". For example, this can be done by briefly touching the door striker.
-- Release the connector lock -A- with a small screwdriver.
-- Disconnect the connectors -1-, -2- and if equipped -3- for the front passenger side airbag unit.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- on the front passenger side instrument panel crossmember.
North American market-specific
-- Remove the bolts -2- for the support for the instrument panel on the instrument panel crossmember.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.
-- Disengage and remove the support -1- on the instrument panel/crossmember mount.
Continuation for all vehicles
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- on the instrument panel crossmember in the center.
Two technicians are needed to remove the instrument panel.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- on the driver side instrument panel crossmember.
-- Lift the instrument panel -1- over the crossmember and remove slightly toward the rear out of the mount -2- and the crossmember.
-- Lift the instrument panel -1-, grab under the instrument panel by hand and disconnect the speaker connector -arrow-.
-- Repeat the procedure on the opposite side.
-- Carefully remove the instrument panel toward the rear from the mount and the crossmember.
-- Guide out the connectors while doing so.
-- Remove the instrument panel from the vehicle interior and lay it on a soft surface.
