8-Cylinder Gasoline Engine 4.0L TFSI

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

• Spark Plug Socket Adapter - 3/8" :VAS 6919 
• Puller:T10530

• Torque Wrench, 6-50Nm:V.A.G 1331A  , measuring range: 6 to 50 Nm
• Or: Electronic Torque Wrench 3-60Nm:VAS 6583  , measuring range 3 to 60 Nm

Removing:

The following preliminary work may be necessary depending on the model:

-- Remove the engine cover. Refer to ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

Ignition Coils Cylinder Bank 1 (right):

-- Loosen the hose clamps -arrows-, and remove the air duct pipe -1-.

-- Remove and disconnect the connectors -1 and 2- from the bracket, and free up the wire.

-- Remove the crankcase ventilation hoses -5- by pressing the release buttons on both sides.

-- Disconnect the connectors and free up the wires:

1 -  For Fuel Metering Valve -N290-

2 -  For Low Fuel Pressure Sensor -G410-

3 -  For Cylinder 3 Exhaust Cam Actuator 1 -F458-

4 -  For Engine Cover Temperature Sensor -G765-

6 -  For Cylinder 2 Exhaust Cam Actuator 1 -F454-

7 -  For Fuel Pressure Sensor -G247-

8 -  For Ignition Coils

-- Remove the nuts -arrows-, remove the wiring duct -9- and push to the side.

-- Remove the double bolts underneath.

Ignition coils cylinder bank 2 (left):

• Engine is cold.

-- To reduce the residual pressure in the cooling system, briefly open the coolant expansion tank cap -1- by releasing the catch -arrow-.

-- Remove the left upper longitudinal member. Refer to OVERVIEW - LOCK CARRIER .

-- Disconnect the connector -1-.

-- Lift the clamp -2-, remove the coolant line and free up.

-- Remove the bolt -3- and nuts -arrows- and move the coolant expansion tank to the side.

-- Disconnect the connector -1- for the Oxygen Sensor 2 Before Catalytic Converter -GX11- and free up the wire.

-- Remove the connector -2- for the Oxygen Sensor 2 After Catalytic Converter - GX8- from the bracket -3-, disconnect and free up the wire.

-- Unclip the bracket from the wiring duct and remove.

-- Release the catch -arrow-, and remove the vacuum hose -1- without damaging them.

-- Move the vacuum hose to the side.

-- Remove the crankcase ventilation hose -5- by pressing the release buttons on both sides.

-- Disconnect the connectors and free up the wires:

1 -  For Camshaft Position Sensor 4 -G301-

2 -  For Cylinder 5 Exhaust Cam Actuator 1 -F466-

3 -  For Fuel Pressure Sensor 2 -G624-

6 -  For Cylinder 8 Exhaust Cam Actuator 1 -F478-

7 -  For Fuel Metering Valve 2 -N402-

8 -  For Recirculation Valve, Bank 2 -N626-

9 -  For Ignition Coils

-- Remove the nuts -arrows-, remove the wiring duct -4- and push to the side.

-- Remove the double bolts underneath.

-- Disconnect the connectors -arrows- for fuel injectors.

-- Insert the Puller:T10530  into the ignition coil opening -1-.

-- Turn the knurled nut -2- clockwise -arrow- until the puller is clamped.

-- Using the Puller:T10530  , remove the ignition coils carefully upright -arrow-.

-- Repeat the removal procedure for all ignition coils.

-- Remove the spark plugs using the Spark Plug Socket Adapter - 3/8":VAS 6919  .

Procedure: Step 3 - Installing the Spark Plugs

-- Install the new spark plugs using the Spark Plug Socket Adapter - 3/8":VAS 6919  and tighten to specification (installation tightening specification table).

-- Lubricate the ignition coils.

-- Insert all ignition coils loosely into the spark plug shaft and align them to the connectors on the connector strip.

-- Press the ignition coils evenly onto the spark plugs by hand. Do not use any impact tools.

-- Install the ignition coil bolts to the tightening specification (installation tightening specification table).

-- Connect the ignition coil connectors one after the other until the locking mechanism engages.

Additional installation is in the reverse order of removal, while noting the following:

Installation is done in reverse order of removal while observing the following:

-- Mount the spark plug connector -2- all the way onto the ignition coil -1- by hand.

• The arrow markings on the spark plug connectors and on the ignition coils must face each other as shown.

Pay attention to the tightening specifications
