Pinion Shaft and Ring Gear, Adjusting

• Careful adjustment of the ring gear and pinion shaft is essential to ensure that the final drive gives long service and runs silently. The location for the smoothest running is determined by moving pinion axially whereby ring gear is moved far enough out of the backlash-free position so that the backlash is within specified tolerances.
• The goal of the adjustment is to reach the greatest smoothness.
• The pinion and ring gear with differential can be replace separately. If at a running time of over 100 000 km (0 miles) the pinion or the ring gear is damaged, it is advisable to replace both components.
• Pay attention to the general repair information for bearings and shims.
• If the pinion is replaced or there are metal shavings in the transmission fluid, then always replace the double angular contact ball bearing on the pinion.

4. M -  Dimension of the center differential to the outer race of the double angular contact ball bearing
5. R -  Actual dimension between ring gear axis and face of drive pinion in position of quietest running
   • The dimension "R" generally is for all dimensions 60.00 mm. There is no individual dimension.
   • The dimension "R" is then adjusted on the Measuring Set - Adjustable Master Gauge:VW 385/30  .
