Valve Timing, Checking

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

Procedure 

-- Remove the upper timing chain cover. Refer to UPPER TIMING CHAIN COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the front noise insulation. Refer to NOISE INSULATION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Turn the crankshaft with the : T40263  , : T40314  and a 24 mm socket on the vibration damper in the direction of engine rotation until the marks -arrows- are almost on top.

-- Removing the spark plug from cylinder 1 with the : 3122B  .

-- Install the : T10170A  all the way into the spark plug thread.

-- Insert the : VAS6341  with the : T10170A/1  all the way and secure it with the locking nut -arrow-.

-- Turn the crankshaft slowly in the direction of the engine rotation until the maximum dial reading is reached. When the maximum dial reading is reached (turning point of the meter) position the piston at >>TDC<<.

TIP: 

With Marks in the Cylinder Head Cover

Without Marks in the Cylinder Head Cover

-- Measure the distance from the edge -1- to the marking -2- on the exhaust camshaft chain sprocket.

-- Once the specified value is reached, measure the distance between the mark on the exhaust camshaft chain sprocket -3- and the mark on the intake camshaft chain sprocket -4-.

NOTE:

If one tooth has an offset, there will be a deviation of approximately 6 mm from the specified value. The timing chain must be installed again if an offset is determined.
