Gear Oil, Checking Level

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Refer to TOOLS FOR GEAR OIL CHANGE

Test Conditions

Move the vehicle onto a 4-column shop hoist or over a work pit so that it stands horizontal.
The selector level is in "P".
The parking brake button is pressed to activate the electro-mechanical parking brake.
The engine is off.

Gear Oil, Checking Level

-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to NOISE INSULATION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Place the : SMN372500 underneath.

CAUTION:

Risk of Injury to the Eyes and Hands by Escaping Oil.

- Wear protective eyewear.

- Wear acid-resistant safety gloves.

-- Cover the area under the oil filler hole with a cloth.

-- Remove the oil filler hole plug -arrow-.

Specified value: gear oil level up to lower edge of the oil filler hole.

-- If the gear oil level is too low, add bevel box gear oil. Refer to the Parts Information for the correct gear oil.

All safety precautions and test conditions must be followed.

-- Remove the nuts -arrows- and remove the right drive axle heat shield.

-- Route the hose for the : VAS6291A upward.

-- Install the : VAS6291/3 until it stops.

-- Attach the charging device hose with the : VAS6291/3 .

-- Check if the valve -arrow- is closed.

-- Attach the oil container -A- to the : VAS6291A .

-- Open the valve -arrow- and hold up the oil container as illustrated.

When gear oil flows out at the : VAS6291/3 , the gear oil level is OK.

-- Tip the oil container so that any excess oil can flow back into the container.

-- When there is no more oil flowing back, disconnect the charging device by pushing the tab.

-- Remove the : VAS6291/3 .

Assembling

Assembly is performed in the reverse order, while noting the following:

-- Replace the oil filler hole plug.

Tightening Specifications

Refer to OVERVIEW - BEVEL BOX COMPONENTS
Refer to DRIVE AXLE HEAT SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .
