Fuel Tank, Removing And Installing, All Wheel Drive Vehicles: Removing
-- Follow all safety precautions. Refer to SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .
-- Follow the guidelines for clean working conditions. Refer to GUIDELINES FOR CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .
-- Move the front seats all the way forward.
-- Switch off the ignition.
Risk of destroying electronic components when disconnecting the battery.
- Follow the steps for disconnecting the battery.
-- Disconnect the ground cable from the battery terminal. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .
TT Coupe:
-- Remove the rear bench seat. Refer to BENCH SEAT/SINGLE SEAT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
TT Roadster:
-- Remove the right rear panel trim panel. Refer to REAR PANEL TRIM PANEL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the right rear bulkhead plate. Refer to the appropriate Service Information.
Continuation for All Vehicles:
Risk of accident due to the weight of the fuel tank.
- The fuel tank must be empty when removing it.
-- Drain the fuel tank. Refer to FUEL TANK, DRAINING .
-- Unclip the right sealing flange cover -1- at the tabs in direction of -arrows- using the : 3409 .
-- Disconnect the connectors -1 and 2- on the sealing flange by releasing the connector safety catch.
-- Lift the tab -2- in direction of -arrow A- so that it is possible to reach between the floor panel and the fuel tank.
-- At the same time, carefully remove the Fuel Pump Control Module -J538- -1- from the mount in direction of -arrow B-.
-- Unclip the left sealing flange cover -1- at the tabs in direction of -arrows- using the : 3409 .
-- Disconnect the all wheel drive clutch connector -arrow- by unlocking the connector safety catch.
-- Open the fuel filler door.
-- Clean the area around the fuel filler neck.
-- Loosen the rubber boot on the fuel filler neck.
Seal the fuel filler tube opening with a clean plug to prevent dirt from getting into the tube.
-- Remove the right rear wheel housing liner. Refer to REAR WHEEL HOUSING LINER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Disconnect the ventilation lines -1 and 2- on the EVAP canister. Disconnect the connector couplings. Refer to CONNECTOR COUPLINGS, DISCONNECTING .
Vehicles through MY 2018:
-- Disconnect the bleeder line -1 and 2- on the EVAP canister. Disconnect the connector couplings. Refer to CONNECTOR COUPLINGS, DISCONNECTING .
-- Unclip the breather line from bracket -arrows-.
-- Vehicles with electronic damping (Audi magnetic ride): disconnect the connector -2- and free up on the clip -4-.
-- Remove the fuel filler tube bolts -1 and 3-.
Vehicles from MY 2019:
-- Disconnect the bleeder line -1 and 2- on the EVAP canister. Disconnect the connector couplings. Refer to CONNECTOR COUPLINGS, DISCONNECTING .
-- Unclip and free up the breather line on the bracket.
-- Vehicles with electronic damping (Audi magnetic ride): disconnect the connector -3- and free up the wire on the fuel filler neck.
-- Remove the fuel filler neck bolts -arrows-.
Market-Specific for North America:
-- Remove the EVAP canister. Refer to EVAP CANISTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, VEHICLES WITH Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor - G400- / Fuel Tank Leak Detection Module - GX36- .
-- Disconnect the connector -2- to release the connector safety catch.
-- Remove the fuel filler tube bolts -1 and 3-.
Continuation for All Vehicles:
-- Remove the right and left rear underbody trim panel. Refer to UNDERBODY TRIM PANELS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the rear underbody trim panel bracket -arrow-.
-- Remove the rear section of the exhaust system. Refer to MUFFLER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [CNTC, CYFB] or MUFFLER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING [DAZA, DNWA] .
-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to the appropriate Service Information .
-- Disconnect the all wheel drive clutch connector -arrow- by unlocking the connector safety catch.
Risk of injury due to the fuel being under high pressure.
- To reduce the pressure in the fuel system, lay clean cloths around the connection point and carefully loosen the connection point.
-- Disconnect the breather line -2- and the fuel line -1-. Disconnect the connector couplings. Refer to CONNECTOR COUPLINGS, DISCONNECTING .
TT Roadster:
-- Remove the diagonal braces. Refer to DIAGONAL BRACES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Continuation for All Vehicles:
-- Place the Engine and Gearbox Jack under the fuel tank to support it as shown.
-- A second technician is needed to hold the rear edge of the fuel tank.
Risk of accident due to the weight of the fuel tank.
- The fuel tank must be empty when removing it.
-- Remove the bolts -1 to 5-.
For reasons of clarity, the fuel tank is shown without the engine and gearbox jack.
-- Lower the fuel tank using the engine and gearbox jack.
-- Turn the fuel tank in the corresponding direction to lower it downward at its side and remove it.
-- A second mechanic is required to guide out the fuel filler neck by hand at the longitudinal member.
