Camshaft Timing Chain, Removing And Installing: Installing

NOTE:

The painted links of the timing chain must be positioned on the markings on the chain sprockets.

-- Mount the timing chain on the intake camshaft.

-- Mount the timing chain on the exhaust camshaft.

-- Lay the timing chain on the crankshaft and hold it there.

-- Install the camshaft timing chain guide rail and tighten the bolts -A-.

With Wrench Clearance

NOTE:

Use the help of a second technician to hold the exhaust camshaft in place.

-- Slowly turn the exhaust camshaft in the direction of -arrow 1- until the :T40271/1 can be pulled from the chain sprocket splines.

-- Carefully release the camshaft, until the camshaft timing chain is laying on the upper guide rail. Hold the camshaft in this position.

CAUTION:

Always check before installing the tensioning rail, whether the colored chain link is still aligned to the markings on the camshaft!

-- Continue to hold the camshaft and install the camshaft timing chain tensioning rail. Tighten bolt -A-.

-- Remove the :T40271/1 .

-- Install the upper glide track -arrow-.

Without Wrench Clearance

A second technician is necessary for the following step.

-- Turn the exhaust camshaft with the :T10172 A slightly in the direction of -arrow A- and push the :T40271/1 from the chain sprocket splines in the direction of -arrow B-.

-- Release the camshaft in the direction of -arrow C-, until the timing chain touches the glide rail -1-. Hold the camshaft firmly in this position, install the tensioning rail -2- and tighten the bolt -3-.

-- Turn the intake camshaft in the direction of -arrow 1-, slide the :T40271/2 out of the chain sprocket splines in the direction of -arrow 2- and release the camshaft.

-- Remove the :T40271/2 .

-- Check that the position of the colored chain link is aligned to the markings.

-- Install the drive chain for the oil pump and the chain tensioner. Tighten the bolt -1- and remove the :T40011 .

-- Install the bolts -arrows- and tighten them.

-- Lubricate the hole -arrow- with engine oil.

WARNING:

Risk of damaging the bearing bracket.

Carefully remove the bearing mount, without tilting.

-- Mount the bearing bracket and the bolts -arrows- hand-tight.

-- Depending on the version, remove either the :T40011 or the :T40267 .

-- Tighten the bolts -arrows-. Refer to OVERVIEW - CAMSHAFT TIMING CHAIN .

-- Install the control valve -item 6- OVERVIEW - CAMSHAFT TIMING CHAIN.

-- Install the :T10531/3 . In the "TDC point" the flat area -1- points upward. Install the :T10531/4 . Turn the crankshaft using a 32 mm open end wrench twice in the direction of engine rotation.

NOTE:

Due to the ratio, the painted chain links no longer match up after the engine has been turned.

Assemble in reverse order of disassembly. Note the following:

-- Install the lower timing chain cover. Refer to LOWER TIMING CHAIN COVER, REPLACING .

-- Install the upper timing chain cover. Refer to UPPER TIMING CHAIN COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the ribbed belt tensioning damper. Refer to RIBBED BELT TENSIONER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the ribbed belt. Refer to RIBBED BELT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Adjust the subframe mount. Refer to SUBFRAME MOUNT, ADJUSTING .
