Driveshaft, Removing And Installing, AUDI A1 QUATTRO: Removing
Perform work on driveshaft on a two-column lift if possible.
Mark the position of all the parts to each other before removing them. Install in the same position otherwise the imbalance will be excessive and the bearings could get damaged causing rumbling noises.
Do not kink the driveshaft, only store and move when fully extended.
Never let the driveshaft "just hang" during removal. Always support it.
The driveshaft is secured to the output shaft/shaft bevel gear on the bevel box with a locking ring.
Always remove or install the driveshaft horizontally from or on the centering pins on the rear final drive.
-- Remove the noise insulation -1-. Refer to Noise Insulation, Removing And Installing .
-- Remove the tunnel crossmember. Refer to UNDERBODY TRIM PANEL .
-- Remove the fuel tank. Refer to FUEL TANK, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
There is a risk of causing damage to the decoupling element
- Do not bend the decoupling element more than 10°.
- Do not load the decoupling element.
- Do not damage the wire mesh on the decoupling element.
-- Disconnect the exhaust system from the clamping sleeve -arrow- and tie up the front exhaust pipe.
-- Remove the rear section of the exhaust system. Refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER (2.0L 4V TFSI Engine; EA 888 Generation II, As of 01.2018), OVERVIEW - MUFFLER (2.0L 4V TFSI Engine; EA 888 Generation III, As Of 12.2017), or OVERVIEW - MUFFLER (2.0L 4V TFSI Engine; EA 888 Generation II, As of 09.2016) .
-- Remove the subframe with the steering gear while securing the subframe. Refer to SUBFRAME WITH STEERING GEAR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Loosen the combi bolts -1- for the driveshaft center bearing approximately 2 turns but do not remove them.
-- Remove the lock washers -item 9- to loosen the heat shield -2- from the body. Refer to -item 9- DRIVESHAFT ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW, AUDI A1.
-- Make sure there is a marking (a color dot) on the flexible disc/the driveshaft flange on the rear final drive -arrows-.
-- If the marking is not there, then mark the position of the flexible disc/driveshaft to the driveshaft flange on the rear final drive.
-- To loosen the driveshaft bolts, counterhold with the Counterhold - Multiple Use: T10172A and the Counterhold - Kit - Adapter 5: T10172/5 on the rear final drive.
-- Remove the driveshaft bolts -arrows- on the rear final drive.
To avoid damaging the driveshaft by bending it, a second technician is required to hold the driveshaft.
Risk of damaging the sealing ring -arrow- in driveshaft flange.
- Remove the driveshaft horizontally from the centering pins.
If seal is damaged, driveshaft must be replaced.
-- Remove the driveshaft first from the centering pin on the rear final drive, while pressing the driveshaft and the engine/transmission sub-assembly slightly forward.
There is a risk of damaging the protective boot in the center bearing.
- If possible, remove, install and store the driveshaft in its fully extended position.
-- Insert a suitable flat head screwdriver -1- between the shaft seal heat shield -2- and driveshaft -3-. By turning the screwdriver 90° using for example an open end wrench -4- remove the driveshaft from the bevel box.
-- Press the engine/transmission assembly slightly forward. Thereby removing the driveshaft from the bevel box output shaft/shaft bevel gear.
-- Remove the center bearing combi bolts -1- and then remove the heat shield -2-.
-- Remove the driveshaft toward the rear and fully extended, if possible.
