Overview - VALVETRAIN

NOTE:

The cylinder head for cylinder bank 2 (left) is shown in the illustration.

Cylinder heads with cracks between valve seats or between valve seat and spark plug thread can still be used without loss of service life if the cracks are minute (max. 0.3 mm width) or only the first four threads of a spark plug thread are cracked.

  1. Cylinder Head
  2. Valve Stem Seal
  3. Valve Spring
    • For the correct allocation, refer to Fig 4
  4. Valve Spring Retainer
  5. Valve Keepers
  6. Hydraulic Adjusting Element
    • Clipped into roller rocker lever item -8-
    • Mark the installation position with paint for reinstallation
    • Lubricate the running surfaces before installing
  7. Clip
    • Not available individually
    • Make sure it is secure
  8. Roller Rocker Lever
    • Mark the installation position with paint for reinstallation
    • Check roller for easy movement
    • Lubricate the running surfaces before installing
    • Allocation to the cylinders, refer to Fig 3
    • Clip to the hydraulic adjusting element item -7- with the clip item -6-.
  9. Exhaust Camshaft
  10. Camshaft Housing
    • With integrated camshaft bearings
  11. Bolt
    • Replacing
    • Use old bolts to measure radial play.
    • Tightening sequence, refer to Fig 5
  12. O-Ring
    • Replacing
  13. Bolt
    • 5 Nm
  14. Intake/Exhaust Camshaft Adjusters -F452- through -F479-
  15. O-Ring
    • Replacing
  16. Sealing Plugs
    • Turn to the left to remove with a screwdriver
  17. O-Ring
    • Replacing
  18. Camshaft Position Sensor 4 -G301-
  19. Bolt
  20. Bolt
    • 5 Nm
  21. Exhaust Camshaft Adjustment Valve 2 -N319-
  22. O-Ring
    • Replacing
  23. Bolt
    • 5 Nm
  24. Camshaft Adjustment Valve 2 -N208-
  25. O-Ring
    • Replacing
  26. Bolt
  27. Camshaft Position Sensor 3 -G300-
  28. O-Ring
    • Replacing
  29. Flat Ring
    • For Camshaft adjuster
    • Replacing
  30. Intake Camshaft
  31. Exhaust Valve
    • Different versions. For the correct allocation
    • Do not rework, only grinding is permitted
    • Mark the installed position for installation later
    • Valve dimensions, refer to VALVE DIMENSIONS 
    • Valve guides, checking, refer to VALVE GUIDES, CHECKING .
  32. Intake Valve
    • Do not rework, only grinding is permitted
    • Mark the installed position for installation later
    • Valve dimensions, refer to VALVE DIMENSIONS 
    • Valve guides, checking, refer to VALVE GUIDES, CHECKING .

CAUTION:

The engine could be damaged.

  • Bring all of the pins for all of the cam adjustment actuators into the installed position.

-- Press down the cam adjustment actuator pins -arrow- by hand.

CAUTION:

The engine could be damaged.

  • Pay attention to the allocation of the roller rocker lever to the cylinders.

  1. Short Version for Intake Valve
  2. Long Version for Exhaust Valve

NOTE:

Replace any bolts that were tightened with an additional turn.

-- Tighten the bolts in steps in the sequence shown:

Step Bolts Tightening specification/additional turn
1. -1 to 22- Install all the way in by hand.
  • The camshaft housing contact surface must lay entirely on top of the cylinder head
2. -1 to 22- 8 Nm
3. -1 to 22- Tighten an additional 90°
