Camshafts Or Camshaft Bearing, Removing And Replacing On Cylinder Bank 2 (Left): Installing

-- Mount the Camshaft Fitting Tool - T40096 onto the teeth of the intake camshaft so that one arm of the clamping tool engages in one sprocket half.

-- Tension the tensioning tool with the thumb wheel until the tooth faces align.

The camshaft thrust bearings and the bearing cap for cylinder bank 2 are marked after work is performed on the exhaust side to prevent them from being installed incorrectly:

Cylinder Bank 2 (left)
L1/L1 Front
L2/L2 Front in the center
L3/L3 Rear in the center
L4/L4 Rear

-- Lay the camshafts thrust bearings "I, II, III" on the cylinder head.

-- Lay the camshaft thrust bearing "IV" on the cylinder head.

-- Check the installation direction of the thrust bearings:

-- Place the camshafts in the "TDC" position in the thrust bearings.

-- Apply the appropriate bearing cap to the corresponding thrust bearing.

-- Loop a cable tie -arrows- on the right and left around the thrust bearing and the bearing cap and tighten them.

NOTE: The cable ties prevent the camshafts and the camshaft bearing from tilting when they are being tightened.

-- Install the bolts -1 to 12- in the bearing cap.

-- Install the Locking Device-Locking Pin T40311/1 in the threaded hole -1- at the level of the 5-cylinder, as shown in the illustration.

-- Install the Locking Device T40311 on the mounting bracket -arrows- for the tension claws, as shown in the illustration.

-- Tighten the bearing cap bolts, refer to Figure.

-- Remove the Locking Device T40311 and the Locking Device-Locking Pin T40311/1.

-- Check the camshaft "TDC" position:

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

-- Remove the Camshaft Fitting Tool - T40096.

-- Install the camshaft timing chains, refer to Installing .

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging valves and piston heads after working on valve train.

  • The motor must not be started for about 30 minutes after installing camshafts because the hydraulic equalization elements must seat themselves.
  • To ensure valves do not strike pistons when starting, carefully rotate engine at least two full revolutions.
