Timing Chain Guard Upper Section, Removing And Installing: Installing

-- Remove the old sealant from the sealing surfaces on the timing chain cover.

CAUTION:

Risk of contaminating the lubricating system.

  • Cover open parts of engine.
WARNING:

Danger of eye injury.

  • Wear protective eyewear.

-- Remove any remaining sealant on the timing chain cover and cylinder head using, for example, a rotating plastic brush.

-- Clean any oil or grease off the sealing surfaces.

NOTE:

Note the expiration date of the sealing compound.

-- Cut the tube nozzle at the front marking (nozzle diameter: about 1.5 mm).

-- Install the seal -1-.

-- Apply a small amount of sealant to the transitions between the cylinder head and the lower timing chain cover -arrow- as shown in the illustration.

CAUTION:

The lubrication system could be plugged with excess sealant.

  • Do not apply sealant bead thicker than indicated.

-- Apply sealant beads -1 and 2- to the clean sealing surface of the left timing chain cover as shown in the illustration.

-- Apply sealant beads -1 and 2- to the clean sealing surface of the right timing chain cover as shown in the illustration.

NOTE: The timing chain covers must be installed within 5 minutes after applying the sealant.

-- On vehicles with a turbocharger bring the upper right cover into the installation position, check the sealant beads and if required correct.

-- Position the timing chain cover and tighten the bolts, refer to Figure.

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

Upper Left Timing Chain Guard Section 

-- Install the left cylinder head cover, refer to Installing .

-- Install the particulate filter:

Upper Right Timing Chain Guard 

-- Install the air guide pipe, refer to OVERVIEW - CHARGE AIR SYSTEM, VEHICLES WITH TURBOCHARGER .

-- Install the right cylinder head cover, refer to Installing .

Continued for Both Sides 

-- Install the plenum chamber bulkhead, refer to Bulkhead .
