Transmission, Removing, Vehicles With 4.0L TFSI Engine: Removing

-- Position the front wheels so they are straight.

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging electronic components when disconnecting the battery.

  • Complete the steps for disconnecting the battery.

-- Disconnect the battery ground cable -2-. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- Remove the engine cover -arrows-.

WARNING:

Fire danger and danger of damaging without engine cover.

  • Before closing the front lid, the engine cover must be installed.
  • Without an engine cover with the front lid closed the vehicle must not be started and must not be driven.

-- Remove the noise insulations -1- and -2-. Refer to NOISE INSULATION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the left and right catalytic converter. Refer to FOR ENGINE(S) CTUA & CGXB - CATALYTIC CONVERTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING , FOR ENGINE(S) CPNB - CATALYTIC CONVERTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING or FOR ENGINE(S) CEUC & CRDB - CATALYTIC CONVERTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the right coolant pipe on the transmission. Refer to FOR ENGINE(S) CTUA & CGXB - RIGHT COOLANT PIPE ON TRANSMISSION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING , FOR ENGINE(S) CPNB - COOLANT PIPES, REMOVING AND INSTALLING or FOR ENGINE(S) CEUC & CRDB - RIGHT COOLANT PIPE ON TRANSMISSION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the radiator with the fan shroud. Refer to FOR ENGINE(S) CTUA & CGXB - RADIATOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING , FOR ENGINE(S) CTUA & CGXB - FAN SHROUD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING , FOR ENGINE(S) CPNB - RADIATOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING , FOR ENGINE(S) CPNB - FAN SHROUD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING , FOR ENGINE(S) CEUC & CRDB - RADIATOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING or FOR ENGINE(S) CEUC & CRDB - FAN SHROUD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

-- Remove the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) cooler. Refer to REMOVING .

-- Remove the bolts -2 through 5- connecting the engine to transmission. They are accessible from above.

-- Move the tower brace into its installed position and then tighten the bolts hand-tight.

-- Secure the engine with the Tensioning Strap T10038 as illustrated.

-- Remove left and right drive axle cover -1- in the wheel housing. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the left heat shield -1-.

NOTE:

Catch any leaking Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) with a cloth.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) pipe -1- from the transmission.

-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the Engine Bung Set VAS 6122.

CAUTION:

There is a risk of destroying the transmission control module (Mechatronic) with static discharge.

  • Do not touch contacts in transmission connector with hands.

-- To discharge static electricity, touch the transmission housing (without wearing gloves).

-- Turn the twist lock counter-clockwise -arrow- and disconnect the connector from the transmission.

-- Free up the electrical wiring harness on the transmission.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and then remove the heat shield from the right drive axle.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and the left drive axle heat shield.

-- Remove the left and right drive axles from the transmission flange shafts. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear and the push the splines together. Refer to STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the heat shield.

-- Remove the ball socket -1- on the selector lever cable from the selector shaft lever using the Pry Lever 80 - 200.

-- Press the securing clips -2- off and remove the selector lever cable from the transmission.

NOTE:

Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

-- Loosen the clamp -1- and remove the coolant hose.

NOTE:

Ignore -item 2-.

-- Loosen the retainer -arrow-, push the release downward and disconnect the connector -2- from the Power Steering Control Module -J500-.

-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the Power Steering Control Module -J500-.

-- Loosen the bolt -2- and remove the bolts -1, 3-.

NOTE:

Ignore -arrows-.

-- Remove the lower cover -1- from the transmission -arrow-.

-- Attach the Crankshaft Turning Tool T40272 to the vibration damper bolts.

NOTE:

Ignore the notch on the Crankshaft Turning Tool T40272.

-- Counterhold the crankshaft with the Crankshaft Turning Tool T40272 and an angled wrench and loosen the drive plate bolts.

NOTE:

When mounting, turn the crankshaft only in the direction of engine rotation -arrow-.

-- Remove the six torque converter bolts -arrow- while turning the crankshaft 60° further in the direction of engine rotation.

-- Remove the starter bolt -1-.

-- Remove the starter from the transmission and leave it in the installation position.

-- Remove the remaining engine/transmission bolts -6 through 11- but leave one bolt -7- installed hand-tight.

CAUTION:

Danger of leaks in the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) pan.

  • The Gearbox Support T40173 must not be set on the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) pan.

-- Place the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS 6031 with the prepared Gearbox Support T40173 on the bottom of the transmission.

-- The transmission support must be placed at the front as follows:

-- Secure the transmission with a tensioning strap -1-.

NOTE:

The Gearbox Support T40173 is not illustrated.

-- Remove the bolts from the tunnel crossmember -arrows-.

-- Remove the last bolt from the transmission to engine connection.

-- Press the transmission off the engine and lower it carefully using the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS 6931.
