Fuel Tank, Removing And Installing: Removing
-- Follow all safety precautions, refer to SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .
-- Follow the guidelines for clean working conditions, refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .
Risk of damaging electronic components when disconnecting the battery.
- Complete the steps for disconnecting the battery.
-- Disconnect the ground cable from the battery terminal, refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .
Risk of accident due to the weight of the fuel tank.
- The fuel tank must be empty when removing it.
-- Drain the fuel tank, refer to FUEL TANK, DRAINING .
-- Remove the rear bench seat, refer to SEAT BENCH/SINGLE SEAT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Fold the insulation mat near the locking flange cover to the side.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and the locking flange cover.
-- Open the connector locking mechanism with the Elbow Assembly Tool T10118 and disconnect the connectors -1 and 2- on the locking flange.
-- Open the fuel filler door.
Seal the fuel filler tube opening with a clean plug to prevent dirt from getting into the tube.
-- Clean the area around the fuel filler tube.
-- Remove the cap -2- for the fuel filler.
-- Disengage the rubber boot -3- from the fuel filler tube -1-.
-- Remove the right rear wheel housing liner, refer to REAR WHEEL HOUSING LINER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove fuel filler tube bolts -1- and -2-.
-- Remove the rear section from the exhaust system, refer to FOR ENGINE(S) CPNB - MUFFLER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING , FOR ENGINE(S) CGXB & CTUA - EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS or FOR ENGINE(S) CEUC & CRDB - MUFFLER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Risk of vehicle tipping on hoist with rear axle removed.
- Secure the vehicle on the hoist before loosening the subframe bolts, refer to SUBFRAME, SECURING .
-- Remove the subframe with attachments, refer to SUBFRAME, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the exhaust system heat shield, refer to FLOOR HEAT SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Disconnect the breather line -1- on the EVAP canister. Disconnect the connector couplings, refer to CONNECTOR COUPLINGS, SEPARATING .
There is a risk of injury because the fuel is under high pressure.
- To reduce pressure in fuel system, lay a clean cloth around the connector and carefully loosen connector.
-- Vehicles with parking heater: Remove the fuel line -1- from the parking heater.
-- Disconnect the fuel line -2- on the front of the fuel tank on the right side. Disconnect the connector couplings, refer to CONNECTOR COUPLINGS, SEPARATING .
-- Place the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS 6931 under the fuel tank to support it as illustrated.
-- A second technician is needed to hold the rear edge of the fuel tank.
-- Unclip the breather line from the bracket -arrow-.
Risk of accident due to the weight of the fuel tank.
- The fuel tank must be empty when removing it.
To improve clarity, the fuel tank is shown without the Engine/Transmission Jack.
-- Remove the bolts -1 to 5-.
-- Lower the fuel tank using the Engine/Gearbox Jack VAG 1383A while guiding the fuel tank with one hand.
