Fuel pump electrical, checking

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Remote control V.A.G 1348/3A with adapter cable V.A.G 1348/3-3
- Portable multimeter V.A.G 1526 B
- Connector test set V.A.G 1594 C
Test conditions
- Battery voltage at least 12.5 V.
- Fuse on fuse panel S228 (position 28) OK.
- Vehicles with MPI engine: Fuel Pump (FP) Relay J17 - arrow - at position 1 in 9-socket relay carrier behind driver side storage compartment is OK.
- Vehicles with FSI engine: Fuel Pump (FP) Control Module J538 OK; check → Fuel Pump (FP) Control Module J538 , checking (vehicles with FSI engine) .
- Fuel filter OK
- Ignition switched off.
Test sequence
Sedan:
- Remove carpeting in luggage compartment.
- Fold forward right rear seat backrest, if necessary.
Wagon:
- Remove left 1/3 backrest →
- 72 - SEAT - FRAMES
- 72 - SEAT - FRAMES for BODY INTERIOR - CABRIOLET
- Remove left side luggage compartment trim and dirt tray →
- 70 - INTERIOR TRIM
- 70 - INTERIOR TRIM for BODY INTERIOR - CABRIOLET
All models:
- Unbolt cover for locking flange in luggage compartment - arrows -.
- Disconnect electrical harness connector - arrow - at locking flange.
- Connect remote control V.A.G 1348/3 A with connection V.A.G 1348/3-3 to contact - 1 - using an adapter cable from connector test set V.A.G 1594 C.
- Using insulating tape, tape over the second contact of connection V.A.G 1348/3-3 to prevent a short circuit - arrow -.
- Connect contact - 4 - to vehicle Ground (GND) using a jumper cable from connector test set V.A.G 1594 C.
- Connect alligator clip to vehicle battery (+).
- Press switch on remote control.
- Running noise of pump must be audible.
NOTE:
- Fuel Pump (FP) runs quietly. Avoid surrounding noises while testing the fuel pump.

If no operating noise can be heard:
- Remove fuel delivery unit → Fuel delivery unit, removing and installing .
- Check if electrical wiring between flange and fuel pump is connected and has continuity.
If no malfunction is detected in wires, Fuel Pump (FP) is faulty - replace fuel pump.
