Fuel pump electrical, checking

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Remote control V.A.G 1348/3A with adapter cable V.A.G 1348/3-3
Portable multimeter V.A.G 1526 B
Connector test set V.A.G 1594 C

Test conditions

Battery voltage at least 12.5 V.

Vehicles with MPI engine: Fuel Pump (FP) Relay J17 - arrow - at position 1 in 9-socket relay carrier behind driver side storage compartment is OK.

Vehicles with FSI engine: Fuel Pump (FP) Control Module J538 OK; check → Fuel Pump (FP) Control Module J538 , checking (vehicles with FSI engine) .
Fuel filter OK
Ignition switched off.

Test sequence

Sedan:

Remove carpeting in luggage compartment.
Fold forward right rear seat backrest, if necessary.

Wagon:

Remove left 1/3 backrest →
- 72 - SEAT - FRAMES
- 72 - SEAT - FRAMES for BODY INTERIOR - CABRIOLET
.
Remove left side luggage compartment trim and dirt tray →
- 70 - INTERIOR TRIM
- 70 - INTERIOR TRIM for BODY INTERIOR - CABRIOLET
.

Unbolt cover for locking flange in luggage compartment - arrows -.

Disconnect electrical harness connector - arrow - at locking flange.

Connect remote control V.A.G 1348/3 A with connection V.A.G 1348/3-3 to contact - 1 - using an adapter cable from connector test set V.A.G 1594 C.
Using insulating tape, tape over the second contact of connection V.A.G 1348/3-3 to prevent a short circuit - arrow -.
Connect contact - 4 - to vehicle Ground (GND) using a jumper cable from connector test set V.A.G 1594 C.
Connect alligator clip to vehicle battery (+).

Press switch on remote control.

Running noise of pump must be audible.

NOTE:

Fuel Pump (FP) runs quietly. Avoid surrounding noises while testing the fuel pump.

If no operating noise can be heard:

Remove fuel delivery unit → Fuel delivery unit, removing and installing .
Check if electrical wiring between flange and fuel pump is connected and has continuity.

If no malfunction is detected in wires, Fuel Pump (FP) is faulty - replace fuel pump.
