Transmission, Removing, Vehicles With 2.0L TFSI Engine Generation III

Special tools and workshop equipment required

WARNING:

Before using the Gearbox Support T40173 always check if it meets the requirements.

The older version mounts, should not be used and should be replaced.

Characteristics (Newer Version)

On the newer version the components illustrated -red- are -yellow - chrome plated.

If the mount does not comply with corresponding specifications, proceed as follows:

  • Contact your tool supplier for an exchange.

Preparing the Gearbox Support T40173:

-- The bracket -1- must be turned so that the shorter side faces up as illustrated.

-- The bracket -2- must be turned so that the longer side faces up as illustrated.

-- The bracket -3- must be turned so that the shorter side faces up as illustrated.

Removing

-- Position the front wheels so they are straight.

-- Turn off the ignition and remove the key.

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging electronic components when disconnecting the battery.

  • Complete the steps for disconnecting the battery.

-- Disconnect the battery, refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- Remove the engine cover -arrows-.

-- Remove the catalytic converter, refer to OVERVIEW - EMISSIONS CONTROL -item 6- .

-- Remove bolts -2 to 5- connecting the engine and transmission.

NOTE:

The bolts -3 and 5- also attach the wire bracket on the transmission.

The bolt -2- attaches the starter to the transmission and has an additional spacer sleeve -arrow-.

Remove the sleeve when removing the bolt at the top of the starter.

-- Move the tower brace into its installed position and then tighten the bolts hand-tight.

-- Secure the engine with the Tensioning Strap T10038 as illustrated.

-- Remove the noise insulations -1 and 2-, refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .

NOTE:

Check the vehicle data label or the designation on the rear final drive itself to determine which one is installed in the vehicle. Then select the correct rear final drive repair information.

-- Remove the driveshaft, refer OVERVIEW - DRIVESHAFT and DRIVESHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the subframe crossbrace, refer to SUBFRAME CROSSBRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

CAUTION:

The suspension components could be damaged.

  • Do not rest the vehicle on its wheels if the subframe mount, steering gear or subframe crossbrace are not installed correctly.

-- Remove the left and noise insulation -1- inside the wheel housing.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the right drive axle heat shield.

-- Remove left and right drive axles from transmission flange shafts.

-- Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear and push splines together, refer to OVERVIEW - STEERING COLUMN -item 18-. .

-- Remove the ATF pipe bolts from the engine -arrow A- and -arrow B-.

-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit VAG1782 under the separating point.

-- Remove the clip -A- holding the Mechatronic wiring harness from the ATF pipe -B-.

-- Remove the bolt -arrow-. Then pull the ATF pipe -B and C- off the transmission and tie it up.

-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the Engine Bung Set VAS6122.

CAUTION:

There is a risk of destroying the transmission control module (Mechatronic) with static discharge.

  • Do not touch contacts in transmission connector with hands.

-- To discharge static electricity, touch the transmission housing (without wearing gloves).

-- Disconnect the connector on transmission by rotating screw connections counter-clockwise -arrow-.

-- Remove the ball socket -1- on the selector lever cable from the selector shaft lever using the Pry Lever 80-200.

-- Press the securing clips -2- off and remove the selector lever cable from the transmission.

NOTE:

Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

-- Remove the lower cover -1- from the transmission -arrow-.

-- Counterhold the crankshaft using the Counterhold - Vibration Damper T10355 to loosen the torque converter bolts.

NOTE:

Turn the crankshaft only in the direction of engine rotation.

Ignore -arrow-.

-- Remove the 3 torque converter bolts -arrow- on the drive plate while turning the crankshaft 120° further in the direction of engine rotation.

-- Remove the bolt -1- from the bottom of the starter on the engine side.

NOTE:

Bolt -arrow 1- cannot be removed.

-- Remove the starter -A- from the transmission.

NOTE:

Locking ring -B- can fall out after loosening the starter.

-- Remove the engine/transmission connecting bolt -arrow 2-.

-- Remove the engine/transmission bolts -6, 8, 9, and 10- but leave one bolt -7- installed hand-tight.

CAUTION:

Danger of leaks in the ATF pan.

  • The Gearbox Support T40173 must not be set on the ATF pan.

-- Place the Engine/Gearbox Jack VAG1383A with the preparedGearbox Support T40173 on the bottom of the transmission. Refer to Preparing the Gearbox Support T40173: (See Figure).

-- The transmission support must be placed at the front as follows:

-- Secure the transmission with a tensioning strap -1-.

NOTE:

The Gearbox Support T40173 is not illustrated.

-- Remove the bolts from the tunnel crossmember -arrows-.

-- Remove the last engine/transmission bolt.

-- Separate the transmission from the engine to the rear.

-- Use spindles on the Gearbox Support T40173 to adjust the position of the transmission while lowering it.

NOTE:

Make sure the lines on the top of the transmission do not get pinched when lowering the transmission.
