ATF Level, Checking
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Vehicle Diagnostic Tester
- Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit VAG1782
- Oil Filler VAS6262A
- Oil Filler - Jointed Hose VAS6262A
- Original 1 liter container
- Protective eyewear
Test Conditions
- The transmission must not be in the emergency running
- Move the vehicle onto a four-column shop hoist or over a work pit so it is completely level.
- The selector level is in "P".
- The parking brake button should be activated to close the electro-mechanical parking brake.
- Exhaust hose/-hoses of an exhaust extraction system connected.
- The Air Conditioning (A/C) and the heater are off.
- Vehicle Diagnostic Tester is connected.
- The ATF temperature must not be higher than 30 °C (86 °F) at the beginning of the test. If the temperature is higher, let the transmission cool down first.
ATF temperature is read on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
The ATF level will vary depending on the temperature of the ATF.
It is possible to overfill the ATF if the level is checked when the temperature is too low.
It is possible to underfill the ATF if the level is checked when the temperature is too high.
Overfilling or underfilling will influence the function of the transmission.
Procedure
-- Select the following menu entries on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in the Guided Functions :
- 02-Transmission Electronics 0BK I J217
- 02-Read Measured Value
-- Select the Transmission Oil Temperature measured value from the list on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.
-- Check the ATF temperature.
ATF Level, Checking and Correcting
- Tightening specification, refer to OVERVIEW - TRANSMISSION DRAIN AND INSPECTION PLUG .
The ATF level is checked at the ATF check and fill hole.
The ATF level is correct if a small amount of fluid drips out of the inspection and fill opening (this is normal as the fluid expands as it heats up) at an ATF temperature between 35 ° to 45 °C (95 ° to 113 °F) (for hot countries 50 °C (122 °F)).
Replace the plug for the ATF check and fill hole.
Danger of causing damage to the transmission.
- Only use the ATF available as a replacement part for the automatic transmission 0BK.
- Using other fluids can cause malfunctions or transmission failure.
- For the correct allocation, refer to the Parts Catalog.
- The ATF filler adapter must be clean. Do not mix the ATF any other fluids.
-- Secure the oil container and the Oil Filler VAS6262A as high as possible on the vehicle. For the correct ATF specification, refer to the Parts Catalog.
Danger of causing damage to the transmission.
- Engine must not be started if only a small amount or no ATF is in the transmission after repair work or after significant ATF loss.
- In this case, pre-filling is necessary, refer to ATF, DRAINING AND FILLING .
-- Remove the rear noise insulation -2-, refer to REAR NOISE INSULATION .
-- Start the engine with the selector lever in "P".
-- While pressing the brake pedal and with the vehicle idling, shift through all the selector lever positions ("P", "R", "N", "D", "S" or "D/S") leaving each position engaged for at least 10 seconds.
-- Move the selector lever into "P".
-- Run the engine at idle.
-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit SMN372500 under the transmission.
Danger of eye injury.
- Wear protective eyewear.
-- When the ATF reaches 35 °C (95 °F), remove the plug -arrow A- and drain any excess ATF.
- If the ATF starts to leak out of the ATF check and fill hole -arrow A- before it reaches 40 °C (104 °F), then the ATF level is OK.
The ATF check and fill hole must be sealed off again before the ATF reaches 45 °C (113 °F) (50 °C (122 °F) for hot climate countries).
-- Tighten new sealing plug for the ATF check and fill hole. The ATF level test is now complete.
-- Install the noise insulation, refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .
- If no ATF leaks out of the ATF check and fill hole -arrow A- before the ATF reaches 40 °C (104 °F):
ATF, Filling
The ATF inspection plug must be installed again before the ATF reaches 45 °C (113 °F) (50 °C (122 °F) for countries with hot climates). Let the transmission cool down and check again.
-- Install the Oil Filler - Jointed Hose VAS6262A into the ATF check and fill hole -arrow-.
-- Fill the ATF using the adapter until the ATF starts to leak out of the check and fill hole.
Too little or too much ATF will impair the transmission.
-- Tighten new sealing plug for the ATF check and fill hole -Arrow A-. The ATF level test is now complete.
-- Install the noise insulation, refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .
