ATF Level, Checking

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2015 Audi Q5, 2014 Audi Q5, and 2013 Audi Q5. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Measure the length of the bleed pipe on the Oil Filler VAS6262A. Shorten it if necessary.

Shorten the pipe to dimension -a-. This assures the pipe on the adapter for Oil Filler VAS6262A will not touch the bottom on some oil containers.

NOTE:

Dimension -a- is measured starting from the shaft (the green surface) on the Oil Filler VAS6262A.

-- Make a mark on the bleed pipe, dimension a, and cut it, with the Brake Line Tool Kit - Pipe Cutter VAS 6056/2.

-- Clean the Oil Filler VAS6262A.

Procedure

WARNING:

There is a risk of injury.

  • Wear protective eyewear.
  • Wear acid-resistant safety gloves.
  • Keep a safe distance away from the coolant fan when working near it because the fan can turn on by itself.

There is an accident risk if a gear is accidentally engaged while the engine is running!

  • Before working on a running engine, move the selector lever into "P" and pull the parking brake button in order to set the electro-mechanical parking brake.
CAUTION:

Danger of causing damage to the transmission.

  • If there is only a little ATF or none at all left in the transmission after a repair or after heavy ATF leakage, engine must not be started.
  • If only a small amount or no ATF is present after repair work or after significant ATF loss, fill the transmission with ATF, refer to ATF, DRAINING AND FILLING .
  • Only ATF available as a replacement part for the 8-speed automatic transmission 0BW Hybrid may be used.
  • Using other fluids can cause malfunctions or transmission failure. Allocate correct fluids.
  • The Oil Filler VAS6262A must be clean and ATF must not be mixed with another fluid!

-- Measure the length of the bleed pipe on the Oil Filler VAS6262A. Shorten it if necessary (See Fig 1).

-- Attach the Oil Filler - Jointed Hose VAS6262/5 on the Adapter For Oil Filling VAS6262A.

Test Conditions

NOTE:

Read the ATF temperature on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.

The ATF level will vary depending on the temperature of the ATF.

It is possible to overfill the ATF if the level is checked when the temperature is too low.

It is possible to underfill the ATF if the level is checked when the temperature is too high.

Overfilling or underfilling will influence the function of the transmission.

Procedure

-- Select the following menu entries on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in the Guided Functions  :

-- Select the Transmission Oil Temperature  measured value from the list on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.

-- Check the ATF temperature.

ATF Level, Checking and Correcting

NOTE:

The ATF level is checked at the ATF check and fill hole.

The ATF level is correct if a small amount of fluid drips out of the inspection and fill opening (this is normal as the fluid expands as it heats up) at an ATF temperature between 35 ° to 45 °C (95 ° to 113 °F) (for hot countries 50 °C (122 °F)).

Replace the plug for the ATF check and fill hole.

-- Remove the rear noise insulation -2-, refer to REAR NOISE INSULATION .

-- Start the engine with the selector lever in "P".

-- While depressing the brake pedal and with the vehicle idling, shift through all the selector lever positions ("P", "R", "N", "D/S") leaving each position engaged for at least 10 seconds.

-- Move the selector lever into "P".

-- Run the engine at idle.

-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit SMN372500 under the transmission.

WARNING:

Danger of eye injury.

  • Wear protective eyewear.

-- When the ATF reaches 35 °C (95 °F), remove the plug -arrow A- and drain any excess ATF.

NOTE:

The ATF check and fill hole must be sealed off again before the ATF reaches 45 °C (113 °F) (50 °C (122 °F) for hot climate countries).

-- Tighten the new plug for the ATF check and fill hole. The ATF level test is now completed.

-- Install the noise insulation, refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .

ATF, Filling

NOTE:

The ATF inspection plug must be installed again before the ATF reaches 45 °C (113 °F) (50 °C (122 °F) for countries with hot climates). Let the transmission cool down and check again.

-- Shake the ATF-container before opening.

-- Screw the 1 liter ATF container on the Oil Filler.

NOTE:

Use Oil Filler - Adapter 6 VAS6262/6 if the thread on the ATF-container does not fit Oil Filler VAS6262A.

-- Secure the ATF bottle with the Oil Filler VAS6262A on the vehicle as high as possible.

-- Install the Oil Filler - Jointed Hose VAS6262/5 into the ATF check and fill hole -arrow-.

-- Fill the ATF using the adapter until the ATF starts to leak out of the check and fill hole.

NOTE:

Too little or too much ATF will impair the transmission.

-- Tighten the new plug -arrow A-. The ATF level test is now completed.
