General Information

Vehicles with electronically-controlled damping and/or gas discharge lamps have an automatic headlamp range control system as standard equipment. Refer to AUTOMATIC HEADLAMP RANGE CONTROL .

To function properly, the electronic damping and automatic headlamp range control need information about compression travel or rebound travel at the front and rear axles.

For this, the position of the left/right trapezoidal control arm in relation to the body is transferred via a coupling rod to Left Rear Level Control System Sensor -G76- and Right Rear Level Control System Sensor -G77-. These transmit electrical signals to the Electronic Damping Control Module -J250- and/or Left High-intensity Gas Discharge Lamp Control Module -J343- /Right High-intensity Gas Discharge Lamp Control Module -344-.

Left High-intensity Gas Discharge Lamp Control Module -J343- /Right High-intensity Gas Discharge Lamp Control Module -344- servicing. Refer to HEADLAMP RANGE CONTROL MODULE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

At the front axle, these signals are transmitted from the Left Front Level Control System Sensor -G78- and Right Front Level Control Sensor -G289- to the Electronic Damping Control Module -J250- and/or Left High-intensity Gas Discharge Lamp Control Module -J343- /Right High-intensity Gas Discharge Lamp Control Module -344-.

These signals are required for determining vehicle level.

The headlamp range control responds automatically to changes in the vehicle level.

The vehicle level can change in the following situations:

NOTE:

Always program the control position and check the headlamp adjustment on vehicles with electronic damping if:

Basic setting of the headlamps. Refer to HEADLAMP, ADJUSTING .

If the vehicle has electronically controlled damping, then the control position must be programmed using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester. Refer to CONTROL POSITION, PROGRAMMING .

If the control position was reprogrammed on vehicles with lane assist, the Directional Stabilization Assistance Control Module -J759- must be calibrated again. Refer to LANE ASSIST, CALIBRATING .

NOTE:

Only sensors of the same version may be installed.

-- Adapt replacement part accordingly and install.

-- Install the bolts -3- using an angled wrench. Do not bend upper retaining plate when doing so.

NOTE:

Hold Level Control System Sensor securely when tightening screws -3-.

Sensor lever must point outward.

-- Install the bolt -1-.

-- Re-establish the connector -2-.

Tightening specifications. Refer to OVERVIEW - TRANSVERSE LINK .

-- Perform the basic setting of the headlamps. Refer to HEADLAMP, ADJUSTING .

-- If the Level Control System Sensor -- was removed and installed on a vehicle with electronically controlled damping or if the linkage was loosened, the control position must be reprogrammed using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester. Refer to CONTROL POSITION, PROGRAMMING .

-- If the control position was reprogrammed on vehicles with lane assist, the Directional Stabilization Assistance Control Module -J759- must be calibrated again. Refer to LANE ASSIST, CALIBRATING .
