Transmission, Removing, 3.0L TFSI Engine

Special tools and workshop equipment required

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging electronic components when disconnecting the battery.

  • Complete the steps for disconnecting the battery.

-- Position the front wheels so they are straight.

-- Turn off the ignition and remove the key.

-- Disconnect the battery ground cable -2-. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- Remove the engine cover -1- and -2- upward.

-- Place the Engine Support Bridge 10-222A with the Adapter T40093/6 on the left and right suspension strut domes, as shown in the illustration.

-- Engage the Engine Support Bridge - Spindle 10-222A/11 on the left and right engine lifting eyes.

-- Slightly pretension the engine with the Spindles.

-- Remove the left and right front wheels.

-- Remove the left and right noise insulation -1- inside the wheel housing.

-- Remove the noise insulation by loosening the fasteners -1 through 3-.

CAUTION:

The suspension components could be damaged.

Do not rest the vehicle on its wheels if the subframe, the steering gear or the subframe crossbrace are not installed correctly.

Do not support the vehicle on the subframe or on the subframe crossbrace (for example using a floor jack or something similar).

-- Remove the nut -1- from the power steering hydraulic line.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the subframe crossbrace.

NOTE:

The illustration shows the installed position in a vehicle with dynamic steering.

-- Remove the right and left subframe shield -1-. To do so, remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the shield toward the inside.

-- Remove the nuts -arrows- on the left front muffler.

-- Remove the nuts -arrows- on the right front muffler.

CAUTION:

The coupling elements in the front muffler could be damaged.

  • Do not bend decoupling element in front muffler more than 10°.

-- Loosen the clamping sleeves -1- and -2-, slide them toward the rear and remove the left and right front mufflers.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the driveshaft heat shield (if equipped) for the driveshaft -A-.

Driveshaft Bolted on the Transmission Side:

-- Counterhold the driveshaft using Counterhold - Kit - Multiple Use T10172 with Counterhold - Kit Adapters 5-9 T10172/5 and remove the bolts attaching the driveshaft to the transmission.

-- Press the driveshaft together with rear final drive; the universal joint is able to slide axially.

-- Secure the driveshaft to the side.

Driveshaft Connected on the Transmission Side:

-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to OVERVIEW - DRIVESHAFT, MOUNTED ON TRANSMISSION SIDE , and DRIVESHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, DRIVESHAFT CONNECTED ON TRANSMISSION SIDE . For Sport Differential, refer to OVERVIEW - DRIVESHAFT, MOUNTED ON TRANSMISSION SIDE , and DRIVESHAFT, MOUNTED ON TRANSMISSION SIDE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

NOTE:

Ignore item -1-.

-- Disconnect the connector -2- from the Engine Speed Sensor -G28- and free up the wire.

-- Remove the lower cover -1- from the transmission in direction of -arrow-.

-- Insert the guide pin for the Crankshaft Socket T40058 as follows:

-- To loosen the bolts for the clutch module, counterhold the crankshaft at the drive plate using the Crankshaft Socket T40058 and the offset open-end wrench.

NOTE:

When mounting, turn the crankshaft only in the direction of engine rotation in direction of -arrow-.

-- Turn the clutch module and additional 60° via the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation and remove the six clutch module bolts -arrow- from the drive plate.

-- Remove the engine/transmission connecting bolts -7 through 11-.

CAUTION:

The airbag spiral spring could be damaged.

  • Only disconnect universal joint from steering gear if front wheels are in straight-ahead position.
  • Do not change the steering wheel and steering gear position. Secure the steering wheel, for example using adhesive tape.

-- Remove the bolt -arrow- for the universal joint. Refer to OVERVIEW - STEERING COLUMN .

-- Press the universal joint off the steering gear and slide it all the way up.

Vehicles with Hydraulic Power Steering Gear

-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction UnitSMN372500 under the separating point for the hydraulic fluid line -1- on the steering gear.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-, disconnect the hydraulic oil line -1- from the steering gear and move it to the side.

NOTE:

To prevent dirt from getting in, seal any open lines and connections with a clean plug taken from the Engine Bung Set VAS6122.

Continuation for All Vehicles

-- Remove the bolt -1- press the retaining tab off the transmission and tilt it back in direction of -arrow-.

-- Remove the bolt -2- and secure the clutch slave cylinder sideways in the engine compartment.

CAUTION:

The clutch slave cylinder could be damaged.

  • Do not press the clutch pedal after the clutch slave cylinder has been removed.

-- Remove the nut -1- for the gearshift rod.

CAUTION:

Danger of causing damage to the gearshift shaft inside the transmission.

  • Do not pry off the transmission shift lever -1- using a pry bar or hit it with a hammer.

-- Position the Puller - Gear Shaft Linkage T40160 and remove the gearshift lever -1-.

-- Place the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS6931 with the Gearbox Support T40173 under the transmission and secure with the tensioning strap -1- as shown in the illustration.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- from the tunnel crossmember.

-- Lower the transmission only to dimension -a- using the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS6931.

-- Slightly preload the Engine Support Bridge - Spindle 10-222A/11 of the Engine Support Bridge 10-222A.

NOTE:

Use the Step Ladder VAS5085 so that the Engine Support Bridge - Spindle 10-222A/11 can be reached on a raised vehicle.

-- Remove the push rod bolt -2-.

-- Remove the connecting rod bolt -3-.

Vehicles with Transmission Range Gear Recognition Switch -F208- Through MY 2012

-- Disconnect and free up the connector -1- from the Transmission Range Gear Recognition Switch -F208- using the Reversing Light Switch Connector Release Tool T40138.

Vehicles with Gear Recognition Sensor -G604- from MY 2013.

There are different connectors to the Gear Recognition Sensor -G604-. Disconnect the connectors as follows:

-- Press the lock -1- downward, disconnect the connector -2- and free up the wire.

or

-- Pry out lock -1- approximately 3 mm with a screwdriver direction of -arrow A-.

-- Press the lock -1- downward direction of -arrow B-, disconnect the connector -2- and free up the wire.

NOTE:

The illustration shows the installation position with the transmission removed.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the heat shield from the right drive axle.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and the left drive axle heat shield.

NOTE:

The illustration shows the installation position with the transmission removed.

-- Remove the left and right drive axles from the transmission flange shafts -arrows-.

-- Remove the nuts -arrows- and bolt -1-, press the right catalytic converter to the right side and secure it.

NOTE:

The illustration shows the installation position with the engine removed.

Use the Socket and Jointed Extension - 12mm T40220 for loosening the nuts -arrow- and the right catalytic converter -A- from the exhaust manifold.

Secure the right catalytic converter loosely using a nut so it does not fall down.

NOTE:

Ignore items -2 through 3-.

-- Remove the starter bolt -1-.

-- Remove the bolt -4- and leave the starter in the installation position.

-- Remove the remaining engine/transmission connecting bolts -3 to 6-.

-- Press the transmission off the engine and lower it carefully using the Engine and Gearbox Jack VAS6931.

If the transmission removed is being replaced, then the following components must be changed:
