Transmission, Removing

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2016 Audi A4 Quattro, 2015 Audi A4 Quattro, 2014 Audi A4 Quattro, 2013 Audi A4, and 2012 Audi A4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

Preparing the Transmission Support T40173:

-- The bracket -1- must be turned so that the shorter side faces up as illustrated.

-- The bracket -2- must be turned so that the longer side faces up as illustrated.

-- The bracket -3- must be turned so that the shorter side faces up as illustrated.

Removing 

-- Position the front wheels so they are straight.

-- Turn off the ignition and remove the key.

CAUTION:

Risk of destroying electronic components when disconnecting the battery.

  • Observe measures for disconnecting battery.

-- Disconnect the battery. Refer to OVERVIEW - BATTERY .

-- Remove the engine cover -arrows-.

-- Mount the 10 - 222 A with the bracket for engine 10 - 222 A /1 and the adapter 10 - 222 A /3 as illustrated.

-- Attach the spindles 10 - 222 A /11 to the front and rear engine lifting eyes.

-- Lift the vehicle.

-- Remove the noise insulation -1- and -2-. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .

-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

-- Remove the front muffler. Refer to EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS for engine code CALA, EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS for engine codes CAED, CAEB, CPMB, CPMA, or EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS for engines CCBA, CGXC, CTUB.

-- Remove the nut -1- from the power steering hydraulic line.

CAUTION:

The suspension components could be damaged.

  • Do not rest the vehicle on its wheels if the subframe mount, the steering gear or the subframe crossbrace are not installed correctly.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the subframe crossbrace.

-- Remove the drive axle noise insulation -1- inside the right wheel housing.

NOTE:

Depending on the date of manufacture, an additional driveshaft heat shield -B- may be attached.

The shape of the additional heat shield depends on the engine and on the date of manufacture.

Mark the installed position of the additional heat shield in color before removing it.

-- If equipped, mark the installed position of the heat shield -B- to the heat shield -A-.

-- Remove the bolts -1, 2 and 3- and then remove the right drive axle heat shields.

-- Remove the right subframe shield under the right drive axle. Refer to SUBFRAME HEAT SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove left and right drive axles from transmission flange shafts.

CAUTION:

The airbag spiral spring could be damaged.

  • Only disconnect universal joint from steering gear if the front wheels are in straight-ahead position.
  • Do not change the steering wheel and steering gear position. Secure the steering wheel, for example using adhesive tape.

-- Remove the bolt -arrow- from the universal joint. Refer to OVERVIEW - STEERING COLUMN -item 18- "Bolt" .

-- Press the universal joint off the steering gear and slide it all the way up.

-- Remove the bolts -1- and -2- and the bracket for the catalytic converter.

-- Disconnect the connectors for the catalytic converter heated oxygen sensor. Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS for engine code CALA, EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS for engine codes CAED, CAEB, CPMB, CPMA, or EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS for engines CCBA, CGXC, CTUB.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the driveshaft heat shield -1- (if equipped).

-- Remove the ATF pipe bolts from the engine -arrow A- and -arrow B-.

NOTE:

Place a catch tray under the transmission to catch any leaking ATF.

-- Remove the clip -A- holding the Mechatronic wiring harness from the ATF pipe -B-.

-- Remove the bolt -arrow-. Then pull the ATF pipe -B- and -C- off the transmission and tie it up.

-- Seal any open lines and connections with a clean plug from the VAS 6122.

CAUTION:

There is a risk of destroying the transmission control module (Mechatronic) with static discharge.

  • Do not touch contacts in transmission connector with hands.

-- To discharge static electricity, touch the transmission housing (without wearing gloves).

-- Disconnect the connector on transmission by rotating screw connections counter-clockwise -arrow-.

-- Remove the ball socket -1- on the selector lever cable from the selector shaft lever using the Pry Lever 80-200.

-- Remove the clip -2- and remove the selector lever cable from the transmission.

NOTE:

Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

-- Remove the engine/transmission connecting bolts -2 through 5- on the transmission side.

NOTE:

The bolts -3- and -5- also attach the wire bracket on the transmission.

The bolt -2- attaches the starter to the transmission and also has a spacer -arrow-.

Remove the sleeve when removing the bolt at the top of the starter.

-- Remove the lower cover -1- from the transmission -arrow-.

-- Counterhold the crankshaft using the T10355 to loosen the torque converter bolts.

NOTE:

When mounting, turn the crankshaft only in the direction of engine rotation arrow.

Ignore -arrow-.

-- Remove the 3 torque converter bolts -arrow- on the drive plate while turning the crankshaft 120° further in the direction of engine rotation.

-- Remove the bolt -1- from the bottom of the starter on the engine side.

-- Remove the starter -A-. Pay attention to the locking piece -B- inside the opening in the starter. Refer to STARTER .

NOTE:

The starter must be installed in order to install the locking piece -B- correctly in the starter opening when installing the transmission.

-- Remove the engine/transmission connecting bolt -arrow B-.

-- Remove the engine/transmission connecting bolts -7 through 10-.

NOTE:

Do not remove the bolts -6- yet.

CAUTION:

Danger of leaks in the ATF oil pan.

  • The transmission support T40173 must not be set on the ATF oil pan.

-- Place the engine/transmission jack VAG 1383 A with the transmission support T40173 under the transmission Fig 1.

-- The transmission support must be placed at the front as follows:

-- Secure the transmission with a tensioning strap -1-.

NOTE:

The T40173 is not illustrated.

-- Remove the bolts from the tunnel crossmember -arrows-.

-- Remove the last engine/transmission bolt.

-- Separate the transmission from the engine to the rear.

-- While doing this, be careful of the steering pinion/steering gear -B- and the power steering hydraulic line -A- on the left side of the transmission.

-- Use spindles on the T40173 to adjust the position of the transmission while lowering it.

NOTE:

Make sure the lines on the top of the transmission do not get pinched when lowering the transmission.
