General notes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Audi A4, 2004 Audi A4, 2003 Audi A4, and 2002 Audi A4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Careful adjustment of the drive pinion and ring gear is important for the service life and smooth running of the final drive. For this reason, drive pinions and ring gears are paired up during manufacturing and are checked with a tester for correct positioning of carrier pattern and low noise emission. The position for quietest possible running is achieved by moving the drive pinion in an axial direction, whereby the backlash remains within the specified tolerance.

Deviation "r" with reference to the master gauge "Ro" is recorded on the outer circumference of the ring gear. Final drive set (drive pinion and ring gear) must only be replaced together.
