Final drive set sequence for re-adjusting
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Audi A4, 2004 Audi A4, 2003 Audi A4, and 2002 Audi A4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
When ring gear and drive pinion have to be adjusted, in the interests of a rational sequence, keep to the following order:
| 1.) | Determine total shim thickness "Stotal" for "S1" + "S2" (sets pre-load for tapered roller bearings for differential). Refer to Determining total shim thickness "Stotal" for shims "S1" + "S2" onward. |
| 2.) | Determine total shim thickness "Stotal" for "S3" + "S4" (sets pre-load for tapered roller bearings for drive pinion). Refer to Determining total shim thickness "Stotal" for shims "S3" + "S4" |
| 3.) | Distribute total shim thickness "Stotal" for "S3" + "S4" so that the distance from center of ring gear to face of drive pinion is the same as distance "R" which was determined during production. Refer to Determining thickness of shim "S3" |
| 4.) | Distribute total shim thickness "Stotal" for "S1" + "S2" so that specified backlash exists between ring gear and drive pinion. Refer to Determining thickness of shim "S2" |
