Shift mechanism, removing and installing

Removing

NOTE: The shift lever knob is removed with shift lever cover and cover for center console.

Lift off cover for center console upward -arrows-.

Release connector piece -1- in direction of arrow and pull off shift lever knob together with shift lever cover upward.

Lift cover off -1- first in direction of arrow -A- and then pull out in direction of arrow -B-.
Remove bolts -arrows C- and then pull ashtray -2- from center console

Remove securing nuts for shift lever housing -arrows-.

Remove bolts -arrows- and detach covers -1- and -2-.

Remove rear cross member -arrows-.

Remove front cross member -1- -arrows-.
Remove rear section of exhaust system (rearward of exhaust pipe clamp(s) -2-:

Refer to 26 - EXHAUST SYSTEM, EMISSION CONTROLS

Remove heat shield -4- above exhaust system.

Remove selector rod -arrow A-.
Remove hex socket-head bolt of push rod -arrow B-.
Swivel shift lever housing with selector rod and push rod downward and remove.

Installing

Installation is carried out in the reverse order.

Push selector rod on so the securing bolt fits in the recess of the selector shaft.

Tighten screw selector rod (arrow -A-).
Push rod must be screwed to transmission (arrow -B-).
Align exhaust system stress-free:

Refer to 26 - EXHAUST SYSTEM, EMISSION CONTROLS

Adjust gear selector mechanism. Refer to Shift mechanism, adjusting .

Place shift lever knob together with shift lever cover onto shift lever and turn connector piece -1- in direction of arrow as far as stop.
