General Repair Information: Notes

The highest level of care and cleanliness along with tools that function properly are required to ensure a proper and successful transmission repair. Of course the general safety precautions also apply when carrying out repair work.

General information that applies to various different repair procedures is listed here instead of repeating it multiple times throughout the information . They apply to this repair information.

Transmission 

• Follow the rules for clean working conditions when working on the transmission. Refer to GUIDELINES FOR CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .
• Clean the ATF lines and the ATF cooler after performing repairs on the transmission. Refer to ATF CIRCUIT .

• Reusable components must be cleaned, checked and replaced (if necessary) before installation. Refer to INPUT SHAFT, CHECKING FOR WEAR .

When installing the transmission, the following fluid levels must be checked and corrected if necessary:

ATF LEVEL, CHECKING

• Gear oil in front final drive. Refer to appropriate service information. .

• Capacities. Refer to appropriate service information. .

• Specifications. Refer to the parts information.

O-rings, Gaskets and Seals 

• O-rings, gaskets and seals must always be replaced.
• After removing the seals, examine the contact surface on the housing or shaft for burrs resulting from removal or for other signs of damage.
• The open side of the gaskets point toward the fluid to be sealed in.
• To install, thinly coat gaskets along outer circumference and on sealing lip with ATF.
• Coat the O-rings with ATF or Vaseline before inserting to prevent crushing the rings during installation.
• Always only use approved ATF or Vaseline. Other lubricants cause malfunctions in the hydraulic transmission control.
• When installing the new shaft seal, make sure the sealing lip does not run on the same point as the sealing lip from the old seal (use press-in depth tolerance).
• Replace paper gaskets, thoroughly clean sealing surfaces and completely remove old seals.

Bolts and Nuts 

• Loosen the bolts opposite of the tightening sequence.
• Bolts or nuts for securing covers and housings should be loosened and tightened diagonally in stages if no tightening sequence is specified.
• The tightening specifications given apply to unoiled bolts and nuts.
• Always replace self-locking bolts and nuts.
