Camshafts Or Camshaft Bearing, Removing And Installing For Cylinder Bank 1, Right: Installing
- Tightening specifications, refer to OVERVIEW - VALVETRAIN .
- Secure crankshaft -1- in "TDC" position using Locking Pin For Crankshaft T40237.
-- Mount the Camshaft Fitting Tool - T40096 T40096 onto the teeth of the intake camshaft so that one arm of the clamping tool engages in one sprocket half.
- The wider arm must engage into the wider half of the sprocket.
-- Tension the tensioning tool with the thumb wheel until the tooth faces align.
The camshaft thrust bearings and the bearing cap for cylinder bank 1 are marked after work is performed on the exhaust side to prevent them from being installed incorrectly:
| Cylinder Bank 1 (right) | |
|---|---|
| R1/R1 | front |
| R2/R2 | Front in the center |
| R3/R3 | Rear in the center |
| R4/R4 | rear |
-- Lay the camshafts thrust bearings "I, II, III" on the cylinder head.
- The cylinder head oil openings -arrow 1- must flow into the thrust bearing oil channels -arrow 2-.
-- Lay the camshaft thrust bearing "IV" on the cylinder head.
- Both alignment sleeves -arrows- must be inserted into the openings on the thrust bearing.
- The alignment sleeves must engage in the openings in the cylinder head.
-- Check the installation direction of the thrust bearings:
- The round edge -arrow 2- points towards the intake side.
- The cornered edge -arrow 1- points towards the exhaust side.
-- Place the camshafts in the "TDC" position in the thrust bearings.
- The intake camshaft -1- must be able to be stopped with the Camshaft Adjustment Pins T40060.
- The bolt -arrow- in the Camshaft Adjustment Pins T40060 must be perpendicular to the center axis of the camshaft.
- The exhaust camshaft -2- must be positioned so that the groove -arrow A- runs parallel above the joint -arrow B- between the thrust bearing and the bearing cap.
-- Apply the appropriate bearing cap to the corresponding thrust bearing.
-- Loop a cable tie -arrows- on the right and left around the thrust bearing and the bearing cap and tighten them.
The cable ties prevent the camshafts and the camshaft bearing from tilting when they are being tightened.
-- Remove the Camshaft Adjustment Pins T40060.
-- Screw in two camshaft chain sprocket bolts with five turns each into the threaded openings of the camshaft as shown in the illustration.
-- Attach the Counterhold - Kit - Multiple Use T10172 with the Counterhold - Kit - Adapters 5-9 T10172/5 to both of the bolts and turn the camshafts approximately 30° counterclockwise -arrow- until the groove -arrow A- in the camshaft points vertically towards the cylinder head sealing surfaces -arrows B-.
There is a risk of causing damage to the valve.
- Do not turn the camshaft further than indicated.
-- Install the bolts -1 to 12- in the bearing cap.
-- Install the Dial Gauge T40311 on the mounting bracket -arrows- for the tension claws, as shown in the illustration.
-- Tighten the bearing cap bolts, refer to Figure.
-- Attach the Counterhold - Kit - Multiple Use T10172 and the Counterhold - Kit - Adapters 5-9 T10172/5 to both of the bolts and turn the camshafts approximately 30° clockwise -arrow- until the groove -arrow A- in the camshaft is above the opening -arrow B- for the Camshaft Adjustment Pins T40060.
-- Check the camshaft "TDC" position:
- The intake camshaft -1- must be able to be stopped with the Camshaft Adjustment Pins T40060.
- The bolt -arrow- in the Camshaft Adjustment Pins T40060 must be perpendicular to the center axis of the camshaft.
- The exhaust camshaft -2- must be positioned so that the groove -arrow A- runs parallel above the joint -arrow B- between the thrust bearing and the bearing cap.
The rest of the installation is performed in reverse order of removal, noting the following:
-- Remove the Camshaft Fitting Tool - T40096 T40096.
-- Install the camshaft timing chains, refer to CAMSHAFT TIMING CHAIN, REMOVING FROM CAMSHAFTS .
Risk of damaging valves and piston heads after working on valve train.
- The motor must not be started for about 30 minutes after installing camshafts because the hydraulic equalization elements must seat themselves.
- To ensure valves do not strike pistons when starting, carefully rotate engine at least two full revolutions.
