Gear Oil, Checking Level
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Charging Device for BorgWarner Coupling 2: VAS6291A
- Charging Device for BorgWarner Coupling 2 - Adapter 3: VAS6291/3
- Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit: SMN372500
- Protective eyewear
- Acid-resistant safety gloves
The bevel box has a separate axle oil fill.
Observe general notes. Refer to GENERAL INFORMATION .
Follow the rules for clean working conditions. Refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .
Test Conditions
- Move vehicle onto a 4-column lifting platform or over a work pit so that it stands absolutely horizontal.
- The selector level is in "P".
- The parking brake button should be activated to close the electro-mechanical parking brake.
- The engine is off.
Gear Oil, Checking Level
-- Remove the noise insulation -1-. Refer to NOISE INSULATION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Place the : SMN372500 under the transmission.
Risk of injury due to hot axle oil.
- Wear protective eyewear.
- Wear acid-resistant safety gloves.
Cover the area under the oil filler hole arrow with a cloth.
-- Remove the bolt -arrow- from the oil filler hole.
- Specified value: axle oil level up to bottom edge of oil filler hole.
-- Fill if the axle oil level is too low. For the correct part number. Refer to the Parts Information.
Fill Gear Oil
- All precautionary measures and test conditions must be followed.
-- If installed remove the bolts -arrows-, and remove the right drive axle heat shield.
-- Route the : VAS6291A upward.
-- Install the : VAS6291/3 until stop.
-- Attach the charging device hose with the : VAS6291/3 .
The hose must not hang through.
-- Check if the valve -arrow- is closed.
-- Install the oil container -A- on the : VAS6291A .
-- Open the valve -arrow- and hold the oil container as illustrated.
- When gear oil flows out the : VAS6291/3 , the gear oil level is OK.
-- Hold the oil container in such a way so that any excess oil flows back into the container.
-- When the oil stops flowing, disconnect the charging device by pushing the tab.
-- Remove the : VAS6291/3 .
Assembling
Assembly is performed in the reverse order of disassembly, noting the following:
Replace the oil filler hole drain plug.

- Bevel box assembly overview. Refer to OVERVIEW - BEVEL BOX .
- Driveshaft; assembly overview - driveshaft. Refer to OVERVIEW - DRIVE AXLE .
- Noise insulation; assembly overview - noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .
