Installing the Center Differential and Housing

• Tightening specifications. Refer to OVERVIEW - CENTER DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING .

-- Clean both housing separating surfaces thoroughly.

Install the gear carrier on the transmission as follows:

• Installed position: The tab on the gear carrier -arrow A- must be inserted into the opening -arrow B- in the transmission housing.

-- Slide the center differential -2- all the way in direction of the gear carrier -1-.

-- Install the plate spring -5-, the adjusting shim(s) -4- and the pressure spring -3- in the center differential housing -6-.

• Plate spring installed position -5- : the inner diameter with it camber -arrow- faces the center differential housing -6-.

-- Apply the Sealant AMV 188 001 02 evenly and not too thick.

-- Then position the center differential housing -6- on the transmission.

-- Press the center differential housing -B- all the way onto the transmission housing and hold it securely.

-- Install and tighten the new bolts -arrows-. Tightening specification, refer to -item  3- Bolt (See Figure).

-- Tighten the bolts -A-. Tightening specification, refer to -item  1- Bolt (See Figure).

-- Tighten the tunnel crossmember on the transmission mount -arrows-. Tightening specification, refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME MOUNT -item 1- "Nut".

-- Raise the transmission and tighten the tunnel crossmember bolts -arrows-. Tightening specification, refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME MOUNT -item 2- "Bolt".

-- Attach or install the driveshaft on the transmission. Refer to OVERVIEW - DRIVESHAFT, MOUNTED ON TRANSMISSION SIDE or OVERVIEW - DRIVESHAFT, BOLTS ON TRANSMISSION SIDE . For Sport Differential, refer to OVERVIEW - DRIVESHAFT BOLTED ON TRANSMISSION SIDE, AUDI A4 AND A5 or OVERVIEW - DRIVESHAFT, MOUNTED ON TRANSMISSION SIDE . .

-- If equipped, install the driveshaft heat shield -A- and tighten the bolts -arrows- to the tightening specification.

-- Fill transmission oil and check oil level. Refer to TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL, CHECKING .

-- Assemble the exhaust system and align it without tension. Refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER .

-- Install the rear noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .

Tightening Specification
